This was our first cruise with Oceana. We wanted to check their R class ships, because we're considering their world cruise.

The food was wonderful, no matter where you ate. The food service staff was also first rate. The buffet did get busy and sometimes it was difficult getting a table, especially when it was cool and no one wanted to sit outside, but we always eventually scoped one out.

We've been to Southeast Alaska before, and the only thing I would have changed as far as the ports go, would have been the stop in Juneau, it was way too busy, with 5 other cruise ships in port. Petersburg or Skagway may have been nicer. We only did one excursion, which was nice, I asked for some other information about things to do in port and the port activities staff could have been a little more knowledgeable about activities outside shore excursions, but they were always helpful and willing to look things up on the computer (when the internet was working).

Port Reviews

Sitka

Sitka hasn't changed as much as the other towns. Still one of my favorites. I liked the totem park and the Raptor Rehabilitation Center. The Russian architecture is also interesting.

Wrangell

We went out to see the petroglyphs and there were a couple dozen eagles on the beach near by. We also went to Chief Shakes Island and saw the new long house. Besides that and the new boardwalk by the petroglyphs, Wrangell hasn't change too much.

Ketchikan

The main part of town has changed a lot since we visited 23 years ago, lots of unAlaskan stores. We went to the Totem Heritage center it was nice and informative.

Juneau

Juneau and Mendenhall Glacier were very crowded, since there were 5 other HUGE cruise ships in town while we were there. The shopping is a little higher scale than Ketchikan (kitschikan). Next time we'll take an excursion to get away from the crowds.
