Sail Date: Jun 2015

During our previous Alaska trip in 2014, it was sunny and warm every day, and we remarked at the time, “There is no way it could get any better.” Suffice to say, we were absolutely right!

One year and one week later, in June, 2015, we left 108-degree Phoenix only to arrive in cold, blustery Seattle to begin our 7-day trip into the Inside Passage of Alaska, and the weather never got much better from there until we sailed back into Victoria six days later. Even so, it was a marvelous trip, and while we did visit many of the same sites from previous trips, we simply got to add “in the rain” after the location. For example, we saw Juneau and Mendenhall Glacier “in the rain,” etc.

We have always said that cruising is an adventure. Translated, the weather is a crapshoot, and what you get is what you get. You can choose to complain because the rain encroaches on the beauty around you, or you can enjoy every moment because you are in the midst of the magnificence that is Alaska – or wherever – and there happens to be rain. We prefer the latter, and choose to avoid those who espouse the former. Basically, being a temperate rainforest, Alaska is green for a reason, and nothing was going to impede our enjoyment of the true Alaska experience. And enjoy it we did! The rains seemed to turn the seas to glass, our ship glided across the water like it was sailing on a cloud, and everything that broke the surface was clearly visible. Whales, dolphins and all manner of sea birds came out to welcome us during our voyage, and we were blessed by what parts of the landscape were not hidden by the constant fog.
