Just got back from an "authentic" aka cold Alaskan cruise. What could have been a let down ended up to be one of my fav vacations. I booked with Chris Roberts at NCL who tirelessly helped me navigate through choices and upgrades and ended up with a dream cabin. From the time we got onto the ship to the time we left everything was smooth and geared to our comfort. From the port to our room was under 30 minutes and I particularly loved that NCL lets guests carry on whatever they wanted skipping the long wait for luggage.

Our Cabin (1005 on deck 11) was wonderful. Yes the Sun is older but somehow the slightly worn wood made me feel comfy rather than the high polish of so many newer vessels. Our walk in closet had enough hangers and I loved the sink with sit down vanity across separated by a frosted glass door from the loo/shower/tub. The tub would comfortably fit someone well over 6'. My initial concern about drainage was for nothing and I can't tell you what was better - long hot showers or long soaking baths. We had ample sleeping room with a separate den easily separated by black out drapes to accommodate night owls or early wakers. The balcony was perfect - I was worried we were at the front of the ship and it would be windy but that wasn't the case. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery even when I had to wrap up in warm clothes to enjoy.

The service from every single person was heartfelt, kind and welcoming. Roy our room Steward found a way to be helpful without evading privacy. We even ran into the Captain roaming the hall one day. We got the dining package and loved Cagneys and Tepanaki. I read reviews about the quality of dining and I have to say you get what you pay for and the quality of food at the specialty restaurants was well worth the cost. Lunch in the dining room was very good too - especially the creative fruit options and I was glad breakfast was so so as I didn't want to eat after great dinners each night.

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MB

Well warm in the most welcoming way. Great closet with a surprisingly ample amount of hangers. Bathtub big enough for a king. Great towels and more than enough storage. The bed was firm but two different pillows of varying plushness made me feel more comfortable. Bonus that the heat worked well when we needed it and double bonus for hot chocolate to warm us.

Port Reviews

Icy Strait

The locals are friendly and if you walk into town keep your eyes open for Eagles. We spent some time with a local artist carving out a totem exhibition for Juneau and it was fascinating to hear his story and see his work in progress.

Seward

We drove from Anchorage to Seward - it's a beautiful drive filled with Picture moments. Seward is a charming town with plenty of good food and shopping. I was torn between driving and the train but think I made the right choice.

Skagway

Loved the town and people - saw some wildlife thanks to local directions. Great place for art. I really enjoyed meeting the locals and listening to what brought me to Alaska and why they loved it
