My husband and I just returned from a fantastic week on the NCL Getaway (both have been on the NCL Alaskan cruises in the past). I did quite a bit of research and planning prior to our trip, which I truly believe helped in the expectations for the trip as well as trying to maximize every minute of our vacation. Prior to the cruise we flew into Miami and stayed in South Beach for two nights (rented a small condo through VRBO). Worked out perfectly then took an Uber to the port on Saturday morning. Embarkation was very quick and painless, rooms were ready shortly after we were on the ship. The ship did seem crowded before and after the safety drill, as well at the Garden Cafe, and that was about it. We are in our mid-30s, no children, so our daily goal was to hit the gym, have a meal, get a drink, find a lounge chair and relax!

Yes, the pool is small. However, if you want to cool off, hop on a water slide! So much fun. We did go to the pool a few times and had no trouble finding space to jump in and hang out. Never found an issue getting a lounge chair. Spice seemed a little crowded when we stopped by, so we didn't go back, as we don't prefer to lay in the sun all day...however, if you ge there early you can probably get a good spot, and they have a waterfall there to cool off. Didn't have a problem gettings drinks anywhere. We did the ropes course, total blast. We had no issues with waiting for elevators, because we only took the stairs during the entire cruise. If you are up for that, I challenge you to do the same! Makes you feel less guilty for all the extra calories you intake during the week! Note we did have the UBP (balcony upgrade promo choice) and we splurged for the UDP. Would recommend either of those promotions, as I felt it really made our trip extra special!

Balcony stateroom was fantastic. We maximized the storage and had no issues (note-I overpack!). Brought magnetic hooks to hang up extra stuff (thanks Cruise Critic tips!). Loved having the balcony..would recommend if you can make it work. I found that a port side forward room worked well for us, great views when at port.

Port Reviews

St. Thomas

Went to Morning Star Beach, close to port. Taxi ride was $12 for two people. Rented chairs/umbrella for $20. Beautiful beach area close to the Marriott. Very quiet, beautiful view, sand, water!

Tortola

Went to Cane Garden Bay Beach, about 20 minutes from the port. Cab ride was $8/pp each way. Rented chairs/umbrella for $30. More crowded than I was expecting. Still a great day at the beach. Restrooms, restaurants, shopping near by.

Nassau

Went to Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island. Cab was $8/pp each way (if I remember correctly...). Beautiful beach, but very crowded with a lot of people constantly asking if we wanted to buy this or that. Rented beach chairs/umbrella for $35.
