We had heard only positive opinions about Viking River Cruises from our friends. But our cruise was something of a disappointment. The worst of Viking's failings stemmed from how they dealt with high water level on the Rhine. No, they can't control the weather. But they can control how they respond to it.

First, at the last minute, we were informed that we would be on a different boat. No problem. All the Longships are the same. It wasn't until we arrived in Basel and were hustled on to a bus to the boat that we realized that we wouldn't be able to tour Basel as we had planned. Instead we would spend 2 days in Breisach. (Breisach was supposed to be the first stop. Nice little town - didn't warrant a 2 day visit.) It seems that an obvious alternative would have been to offer us the option to spend some time in Basel on our own and pick us up later. Apparently Viking's customer service commitment couldn't work this out for themselves.

Second disappointment, 2 days into the trip we were told that we had to pack up our belongings, because we had to change to the original boat. No attempt was made to explain this. As I said all the Longships are the same, why change. So left to our own suppositions, we concluded that this was simply done to ease their administrative burden at the expense of their customers.
