Sail Date: Dec 2008

This was my 6th cruise, but first on a Holland America Line.  Others were Carnival and Royal Caribbean.  Let me first say that this cruise line apparently appeals to the retiree crowd.  Most of the guests were >60 yrs old.  That did not stop me (39 yrs old) from having fun, however.  There were still plenty of young people and people "young at heart" to have fun with.  My husband took the cruise to participate in a conference, and I went along for vacation.  We took a flight from Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale and caught a taxi to the port 2 miles away-no problems.  We had completed our check-in online 2 weeks prior to sailing, and so check-in at the port was quick and easy-we were on the ship, eating lunch at the Lido restaurant within minutes!  We met "Burt", a restaurant staffperson, in line who immediately committed our names to memory and greeted us every day with a pleasant smile. Apparently, Burt is famous for this because I see where others have mentioned him in their reviews.  We then explored the ship, which is very large, but very CLEAN and beautiful! One note, we did not get our luggage until after 5pm so we were stuck wearing our winter clothes all day. After the obligatory safety drill, we went to the sail away party and started our week long vacation. Our room was on the 1st floor (main deck) and was an outside cabin with a window-very nice. The bed was 2 twins put together but very comfortable. We had a small flat screen TV, hairdryer, mini-fridge, robes, and plenty of closet space (not many drawers, however). The water pressure in the sink and shower was excellent. The room was quiet-I did not hear my neighbors the whole cruise. This is one perk of sailing with seniors-no crazy, drunk teenagers or children screaming at all hours of the night! Once again, let me mention how clean the ship was. On Carnival cruises, it is always scary when you have to use a public restroom, especially around the pools. Not the case with the Eurodam-every public restroom was clean and well stocked, even included linen hand towels for drying hands (nice perk!). Now let me commend the staff. The cruise director Shane Michaels was funny, friendly, and could be seen all over the ship. He seemed to really appeal to both the seniors and young people on board. He went out of his way to make sure I was still having fun and getting involved in activities when my husband was in his conference. But he wasn't intrusive. DJ Glenn was also a leader in many activities, and I must say, he is not bad to look at either, ladies! Joy led many events and once again, as everyone else on board, was always smiling. The staff in the Ocean BarEdwin, Rommer, and Sol, were wonderfully entertaining-YOU MUST VISIT the Ocean Bar at least once and have a drink with them! And, the different musical groups on board appealed to the varying musical interests of the guests. Finally, the 2nd show on the ship performed by a group of very talented dancers and singers was the BEST show I have ever seen on a cruise ship! It is a multi-million dollar production performed on a very technically advanced stage. We had "open seating" dining, which meant we could show up at any time and get seated with different people every night. Unfortunately, you also got different servers every night, so service was impersonal. The food in the dining room was good, but to tell you the truth, I liked the food in the Lido Restaurant much better-especially breakfast! We did not eat in any of the other restaurants that you had to pay extra for. Ports of call: Grand Turk-just left ship to lay out on the beach and the pool that is portside. San Juanwas raining, so only ventured into town briefly to explore the Old Town area. Really wished I could have done more in San Juan; it just seemed so neat and historic. St. Thomaswent to shopping area only to be harassed by store owners trying to get me into their shops. Did not see any beaches; apparently you have to either buy an excursion or take a taxi to the north side of the island. Half Moon Cay-bad weather so we weren't able to dock. Instead, had another day at sea, got free champagne with dessert and a slight refund off the port fees we would have paid. Shane did a great job of adding more activities at short notice: team trivia, name that tune, a backstage tour and Q&A with the dancers/singers, etc... In conclusion, I would say this is the best cruise I have ever been on and I had a great time! I really didn't mind that I was younger than most of the guests. One more thing I should mention: they have "wine cards" you can purchase, a 10 glass or a 20 glass. You can choose from 4 house wines: 2 reds and 2 whites and can use it in all of the bars and restaurants on the ship-they just punch it when you use it and it does save a little money to do it this way. The drawback: if you are a wine snob, you may want to check the house brands or sample them prior to buying the card-I found 2 of the wines were hard to "choke down".

Cabin Review

Outside cabin, comfortable bed and linens, good water pressure, ample closets but few drawers, quiet room and hallway, crew available, but not intrusive.
