I booked 2 weeks before the cruise date as a way to be sure we relaxed following a stressful family situation. We had been on the Legend once before and felt sure of a quality experience. We had no desire for shore excursions and did nothing in the Ports of call other than look at the shops at the piers. Rates: We have never sailed so cheap. We were booked in an inside cabin guarantee at a incredibly low rate, and were assigned a cabin on deck 7 aft. We had little need or desire for extra cost services or beverages and felt this was the best cruise bargain we have ever had. Of note was a $20.00 credit given for a reduction in the port fees charged by the Mexican government applied automatically. Cabin: We prefer an inside cabin as we like to sleep in a very dark room. Also we find we can cruise much more often by booking the much lower rates on inside cabins. This cabin was very well organized and adequate for us. We spend little time in the cabin other than to sleep and change clothes or watch TV. The cabin could have been cleaned much better before our arrival. We found open condom packages and unused condom packages under the bed. Dusting was somewhat hit or miss, but not seriously bad. We did watch a couple of movies on the TV, but found the one chair and the bed fine for us. Room Steward: Not the best we have ever had. He was polite, but somewhat reserved. He was good at the towel animals, but did not have an eye for details. (See Above) We found his schedule to be somewhat inflexible. We asked to have the ice bucket filled each morning so that my wife could use the ice in an ice pack for her feet before lunch. It never happened. He stated that he filled the ice buckets at 1:00 PM since he had to sterilize his hands after changing linens and cleaning. Dining Service: Chris was very friendly and attentive. He quickly learned our preferences and worked hard to meet them. Service at our table for 2 was quick and accurate with close attention to details and friendliness. He was fun and was quick to say "Hi" to us when he was pulling lunch duty on the Lido deck. Overall, one of the best Dinning Stewards we have ever had. I do want to give special praise to out maitre'd, Yusuf. We have had the pleasure of having him serve us once before. I find that he runs a great dinning room and goes out of his way to talk to as many passengers as possible. He has a great sense of humor and always was ready with a quick smile and a desire to ensure the best service possible. He mentioned that he will be leaving the Legend in a few months to go to the Carnival Splendor. That will be a lucky ship to get a man of his quality. Be sure to say "Hi" to this man "from Kentucky" (Sure he is!). Dining: Very good, but not quite as good as out last time aboard the Legend a year ago. The lobster tails were larger this time, but were a little dry and too cool. My wife ordered a second on+e and it came out hot and moist. The beef in Truffles was good and cooked as requested. The food in the Lido buffet was good for buffet food. They made the best Rubin sandwiches to order. One of the cooks that worked making omelets for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch quickly learned my preferences and somehow learned my name. He would greet me and asked if I wanted my "regular" and quickly produce it with a smile. That was the best buffet experience I have ever had on any cruise ship. We did not "do" the Golden Fleece this time since on our last cruise we found it a very poor value. The food and service in the Truffles main dinning room was better. We used the traditional assigned seating; having requested a table for two near the entrance due to my wife's limited mobility. I was very disappointed to learn that they have done away with the midnight buffet. That was always one of the high points for me on every cruise. It is just another example of the slow erosion of the cruising experience we have seen over the past few cruises. Activities and entertainment: We did not plan to participate in any on board activities and really just relaxed, read, played cards and strolled around deck. We did attend the evening entertainment, and found it sadly lacking in professional quality. The comedians were stale with old jokes and seemed focused more on bathroom and body function humor that anything more adult. The juggler was very good considering we were in rough water from Hurricane Paloma. The follies reviews were about the same as always and were average for a cruise. We did enjoy the classic music trio that played several times for us. And the piano player was better than most. One reason we enjoy the Legend is that is is easy to get around and fine quiet places to relax. PROS: Very cheap cruise and a great value for the money. Most of the staff is far better that the average crew aboard a cruise ship. Better than average food. CONS: Expected services and activities continue to fade away. Room was not cleaned properly between cruises. Costa Maya was not worth stopping at.
