Seven days on the Star
Destination: Mexican Riviera
Embarkation: Los Angeles
Embarkation went smoothly but was very crowded and long lines and again the personnel were not very friendly. NCL does offer free champagne and mimosas once you actually get past all the checkpoints and are onboard. Cabins were not ready until 1:30pm but the buffet was open.
The buffet offers a large number of different foods and the quality was good. The buffet offered sushi some days. We mostly ate at the Versailles Restaurant which is very pretty and the waitstaff could not have been nicer and again the food was good. Also we never had to wait in line. We were thinking of trying the specialty restaurants (total of five I think) but the charges were higher than what I saw on the NCL website. We talked with More people who had gone to them and most were not impressed.
Our cabin was nice with plenty of storage space and a large bathroom. The attendants were charming and friendly and kept the room clean at all times.
The ship looked clean and seemed well maintained although we did have an air conditioning problem for one day but it was resolved rather quickly. NCL has a large number of hand sanitizing stations and we appreciate that and use them every time. The Stardust Theater is very pretty and holds a large number of people but you still need to get their about a half hour before the shows begin to get a seat. There are two nice quiet card rooms, a large library with refreshments, and a large cinema but it was difficult to find out what was playing and when. Supposedly the list is posted outside the cinema. They gave out a listing at the front desk but it was not always accurate. Sometimes the listing was in the Freestyle Daily Activities and sometimes not.
Shows were average with the exception of Second City Comedy Troupe and Magician Murray. There was a Folkloric group that performed one afternoon and were great even though we had seen them before. There was a excellent quartet that played and sang in the Atrium and some good singers in some lounges.
Activities were lacking - especially since this cruise has three sea days. There were some activities that had a charge - usually $15. They did have a fun Friendly (family)Feud show that was fun and a Murder Mystery Dinner (same one from two years ago) but for the dinner it is important to have the correct number of participants for the roles which did not happen. Also this event is adults only but one family insisted on bringing their child.
There were several art auctions and interesting art lectures associated with them.
The outdoor pool was a disappointment as it is very small and unattractive with huge water slides. The ship seems geared to younger families with children.
We usually do not get off the ship in the ports due to health problems. Just wanted to note that the temperature was very hot and humid in all three ports.
Disembarkation was very crowded. NCL offers walk off and take your bag with you and it seemed everyone chose this option as elevators were jammed and difficult to get.
Overall would I sail on this ship again? Not sure. We have sailed with NCL in Hawaii in the last two years and found it to be a more pleasant experience. Less
