Let me make one thing perfectly clear (shows my age) - A cruise, regardless of what I may say below, is a cruise and I'd rather be sailing on my vacation than not. So without further ado, a recap of last week's sailing of the Pearl on it's Western Carib adventure. Well ok, just one ado - kudos to our CC friend Carole who organized the Meet and Greet. Met a number of CC members second day out. A fun gift exchange and really set the tone for the trip. Now on with the show.

Embarkation - having sailed 14 time previously, this was our first trip flying down from our lovely state of TN. We've driven down in the past (14 or so hours. How wrong could I have been all those times?). Flying in is the only way to do it. Easy taxi ride to the port from MIA. Embarkation went well with only a minor glitch. Seems when we checked in and they took or pictures, they put my mug on my wife's card and her's on mine (I got the better deal by far). Poor security folks gave us a funny look each time they scanned the card. Other than a few calls from security after each port inquiring whether one or the other returned, no problem. Stateroom wasn't ready when we checked in and we were pleased that they had escorts to take us to the lunch buffet.

The Pearl - Interesting ship and decor. Not too keen of the outside graphics (kind of reminds me of elementary school for some reason). While large, it's not huge and has a more intimate feel about it. Inside decor seems to have little in common with the outside graphics which is a plus. Getting around isn't overly complicated once you work out where the restaurants are and how to avoid the 'you can't get there from here' dilemma. Hint - going from the Summer Palace - exit top of stairs (Deck 7) and to the right. If you're expecting a large atrium with spectacular views, this isn't the ship for you. The atrium is small in size, but well appointed. Houses an immense large screen 'TV' which attracted a lot of attention given they were broadcasting the baseball playoff series. Promenade Deck 7 was the place to be to lounge and read. Lots of deck space around the ship if you wanted to sun and read. Nice pools, kids would love the water slide. Sometimes felt too "Carnivalish' for me, but then I'm the sit and read type anyway. Yes, they do have bowling on board. At $7 a game, we passed (would have been embarrassed to ask for the bumper guards to be put up anyway). Saw the rock climbing wall, didn't see any climbers.
