family cruise on the Carnival Valar

Sail Date: September 2008
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

Flew into Miami the day before our cruise stayed in La Quinta West Airport. Nice hotel, but the shuttle took over an hour to pick us up. I would recommend the hotel, but would take a taxi from the airport.

1st day- Kids wondered around. We were in an inside room that slept 4. It was nice and comfortable. The difficulty was dressing in the small bathroom. The housekeeping was outstanding the whole trip with fun towel animals each night! We brought our own luggage on which would have been a great idea because it made getting onto the ship easy except the elevators were broken and we ended up pulling the suitcases up 6 floors to Rosies. The fitness room was to busy to use the whole trip. I did love my facial.

Dinner was so wonderful. Hari and Igusta made our trip. We never missed a dinner at the Washington because of the fun services and terrific food.

We went to the kids disco but it was terrible. Only about 6 kids showed up and the music hurt More your ears. Kids wanted to leave after about 3 minutes, but we sorta dragged one out on the floor with us but they were not happy so we left. We then went to the Welcoming Opening show which had a fake strip tease where the dancers shook themselves in shorts and bra tops. We left after 30 minutes and had a great time walking around the ship.

2nd day- Kids tried the pool and slide but it was so crowded that they said it was not for them. We ended up playing about 3 rounds of put-put golf. We loved the food at Rosies.

Carnival kids had great staff but the programs were BORING. They only had one activity at a time and some were for the shows that showed dancers in G-strings. They had build a bear for 1 hours sometimes twice a day which you paid extra money. Water breaks were considered activities, unsupervised scavenger hunts around the ship which we didn't think was safe. The fun/safe activities that the kids did do were shirt painting, candy bingo, flag world and movie night. Family water war was OK but their was a German lady who insisted bathing topless and who became angry when asked to cover up for a few minutes. Security was called. Water war day entailed tossing 1 water balloon at a parent with a large sling shot. We had a complete 1st when the kids why I didn't bring homework like the other parents did. I just never dreamed they would be so bored they would want to do schoolwork. They did read 3 novels and I had them journal about the trip.

3rd Day- A Blast was had by all at Stingray. We bartered when we departed the cruise by tender and paid $30 per person for 7 mile beach trip at a public beach and boat ride to stingray city.

4th Day- A fabulous time was had by all in Roatan. We used Bodden tours and paid $100. If we did it again we would do what some others did and save about $40 just bartering at the pier- our guide was very nice but had no clue about plants, flowers and history. We went to see the iguanas and botanical garden. Skipped the ropes course because we have done this many times and it seemed over price for the 12 platforms at $45. If we were to do it again and wanted to snorkel, we would go with the ship excursion to gumbalinda park. There were many places that were closed if you didn't book with the cruise.

5th- Went cave tubing in Belize with cave-tubing.com. We had a ball. I would not recommend the bus we rode on because we were on it for 2 hours and we had terrible headaches from the mothball smell, but there are other buses. The kids are swim team kids and we are divers so I wasn't worried enough to cancel, but there was a death on the tubing the week before we went down it. If you stay to the right you won't have any problems.. on the left side when the waters high is a under ground river that someone was sucked under and passed away. Richard the leader was wonderful, but the owner didn't seem to care about the guests. There was a problem with transportation for the 4-wheeler people.

6th- Had a ball snorkeling in Cozumel. We bartered and paid $30 per person. It was great. Not Sante Rosa Wall for those who dive but fabulous fun for kids.

7th- Out to sea.. Kids read, wouldn't go to Carnival Kids. There was alot of smoking everywhere and even where the kids sometimes met in the Disco. It was hard on the lungs so we hung out at the put-put/deck and in our room most of the day.

It was a great trip. We loved the food and excursions. We did go to Fat Cat(who was funny), captain party(not the place for kids even though some people did bring them) & ventriloquist/comedian(to dirty for kids). If you like R/X entertainment then the entertainment was plentiful. Would we do this trip again maybe because it was dirt cheap, but only if we could bring along another family who would trade off with the childcare? Less
