Sail Date: Feb 2008

We cruised on Liberty in Feb. Things went from bad to worse. There were some good moments but in all a disappointing trip. First of all, there are too many people on board and many were rude and pushy. Do not book your flight and transfers through RCC. It may be a little cheaper but I will elaborate as I go. We flew out of LAX (Delta)after spending the night in the Holiday Inn and parking our car there for the week. They have a shuttle to the airport. easy so far. LAX is no fun, believe me. Our flight stopped n Atlanta and we were to change planes for our hop to Miami. Got to the gate on time (barely) to find our plane and gate had been changed. Hustled to the new gate to find that it had been changed back to the original gate. Hustled again and were almost the last ones on board. Arrived in Miami, met by a grumpy older man and eventually shuttled to the Westin Airport Hotel. This place is a dump, our room was OK but the toilet was plugged up and no coffee for the coffee make etc, etc. The hotel is isolated from other services and cabs are expensive. We decided to go into Miami and see what South Beach was all about. Cab was 31.00 and dropped us off on Lincoln Street. Best place to eat is the Nexxt cafe, you sit out side, rest rooms are to be avoided, but the food was like Cheesecake Factory and enough for more than two people. Cab ride back was 33.00, go figure. We decided to eat breakfast at the hotel before 11 AM checkout. The only thing available is a buffet breakfast and it was rather expensive, I think is was 30 or 40 bucks and not that good. Went to the lounge for pickup and was told we would be picked up at noon and that you could check out a little late with no problems. Waited in the lounge while 4 buses sat outside for too long. would not board any of the buses until everyone was accounted for. You can see what is coming. Left the hotel at about 12:50 and arrived at the port just after everyone else. The line was 6 wide and about 1/2 mile long. It looked like the death march from Correigador. When we arrived at the port, No one told us what to do when we exited the bus, so we went to the end of the line. Waited about 45 minutes and then the lines were split and directed to two different doors. More waiting. Eventually things picked up as you are then diverted to section for your deck. This was a good way to do the embarkation and made for shorter lines. Eventually boarded about 2:15/2:30. I headed for a drink before going to our cabin. Then to the buffet. People acted like they had not eaten in weeks and many would just crowd in and bump you from behind. You know where these people are from. Hard to find a table but managed. Buffet was not nearly as good as our last cruise, (Mexico-Dawn Princess). Settled in and went out on the balcony for another drink. Our room steward was almost one existent. The dividers between balconies is just a plexi-glass panel and not too private, The couple next to us was having a fight. Do you blame them. Went to dinner at scheduled time (second seating) and had a table for 4 shared with a nice couple from England. Dinner was surprisingly good and our waiter and assistant (Madoo and Rachael) were outstanding. We eat there every night, mostly to avoid the buffet. Johnny's Rockets was always a 45 min to 1 1/2 hour wait and we skipped it. Shows were pretty good, about an 8 compared to a 9 for Princess. Ice show is not to be missed. Get in line for tickets twice so you can get both nights, its worth it. Deck chairs were impossible....We went up at 8 am and they were all taken with various objects to reserve them. The cantilevered spas were never crowded. Pool was small, everyone hanging on the edge. Performers at the pool were very good. Eventually, after walking around the deck for about 40 minutes we found a couple of deck chairs (in avery poor location) and began to relax. Noticed the reserved chairs had not been visited for the 2 to 3 hours we were there. RCC says that this is policed so that no one monopolizes the chairs but they do not. After we figured out a decent routine the cruise was OK. Room service was Ok but not as good as Princess. Best deal is the Promenade Cafe..Gourmet coffee, fresh pastries and sandwiches, best service on the ship and very friendly staff. The help desk staff is under trained and didn't even know where the ship was to dock in Grand Cayman. They didn't know anything any better that I did. No answers. Excursions...Labadee is a peninsula leased by RCC and is a beach area with a couple of restaurants and areas for sunning and water sports. There is a craft market, but beware, you will be hounded to death, just as it will be in Montego bay. Again more rudeness, while waiting in line for the picnic buffet, my wife was jostled and bumped continually from behind and then a guy crowed in front of her and dumped most of her plate on her. On to Grand Cayman. It's flat. This is where I asked about where the ship docked (there are two locations) because we had booked an excursion with Capt Marvin for the Stingray City trip. They didn't know. The trip to Stingray City was OK...almost any of the charters you might like to use would be OK since they were all there. It must have been high tide since the water was up to your chin and a little rough. My wife eventually bailed and went back aboard the boat. I avoided the crowd and snorkeled around the perimeter and touched and followed many stingrays. This is a nice experience. The guide aboard our bus told us that during the last hurricane, 85% of the island was underwater. Hawaii it is not. There are several nice stores in the terminal area also. Eat at Hammerheads, very good and reasonable. On to Montego Bay, Jamaica. We were warned on this forum about leaving the ship, but there are several trams just outside the terminal and you will not be hassled. However do not get off at the locals craft market. Stay on the shuttle and stop at Margaritaville and then a market place of shops similar to a strip mall. No hassle there. Last stop, Cozumel. Unlike the other Mexican ports there is almost no hassling. Shared a cab to Pancho,s Backyard (not to be missed) and then walked back to the ship, shopping as went went. No excursions. Now it gets bad again. Disembarkation. Since we had transfers with RCC, we were called to one of the lounges and when all were accounted for, herded out to the street in front of the terminal. Then our guide disappeared without a word. We asked one of the attendants at the podium set up outside and were told we did not have a transfer. Since it was getting late for our flight, we shared a cab with another of the group, and paid for our trip to the airport. Now we are headed for Dallas on our way to LAX. Thunderstorms.....circled the airport for an hour before landing. Got to are terminal in time, to be told our plane had been given to another flight. 2 1/2 hour wait for another plane. Arrive at LAX late. Our bags are at another terminal, about a mile walk. Eventually took the Holiday in tram, picked up the car and drove home.....Not the best trip I have been on. Next is Tahiti with Princess....only 670 people and the islands are not flat.
