My husband and I just returned from a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise on the Triumph. This was our 3rd Carnival cruise and we rank it less than average compared to the other ships we have sailed on. The ship was pretty well maintained but the service was very poor. When we first arrived to our cabin it was dirty and looked like a cheap hotel room. There was dirt on the bathroom floor and in the shower as well as food from the previous guests on the carpet. The storage shelves were dirty and sticky and there was what appeared to be old suntan oil residue all over the mirrors in the closet. We contacted our cabin steward and he was more than rude about fixing the problem so we then had to contact the hotel manager to demand a clean room. Overall, the problem was fixed but we had to get rid of our original cabin steward because he was so rude to us when we contacted his manager!
Also, we were slightly disappointed in the shows this time. They seem to play the same shows each year. We have practically memorized the "Around the World" show. Also, we were expecting at least one "Vegas style" show but were disappointed when it turned out to be only a musical with nothing "Vegas" about it. However, the magic show was awesome and made up for the others. The activities seemed to be planned at odd times also. The Lido Deck party was held in Cozumel while we were still in port! I was disappointed because that is usually one of the best activities on Carnival and I had to miss it due to port activities. It would have been nicer to have that on an "at sea" day so more people could attend.
Even though there were some games by the pool, it seemed as though most everything was held in the Rome Lounge. It would have been more practical to have more events outside when weather was permitting.
Now the dining issue. The food was overall pretty good but the dining staff needed a little bit more training. It would have been better if the table got all of their food at the same time instead of a few people getting their appetizer and then a while later the rest of the table getting theirs. This occurred with every course of the meal every day. The good aspect is that we traveled with 2 other couples and no one felt inclined to wait for everyone to have their food before eating theirs. Also, it seemed as though the menus do not change from ship to ship. I remember the same food items from our last 2 cruises. A little variety would be nice, especially since there are a lot of past cruisers on Carnival.
Overall, our trip was nice but I think we will be choosing a different cruise line in the future. Carnival seems to be going down hill when it comes to service and quality. I think they need to stop building new ships and work on bringing back the good quality and service to the ones they already have!
