My DH and I cruised on Destiny July 6-13 and loved the whole week. The trip was to celebrate our 15th anniversary. I had done my research on this site and others and thought I was pretty prepared. We had decided that our fun level depended a lot on our attitude so we went in thinking positively. We wanted to get the most out of every minute and every dollar!
After taking the kids to Grandma's house, we flew AA to San Juan. We used the FlyAweigh service with transports included. It was OK, but a little confusing. We followed a gal to a bus and on the way gave our luggage to some guys with a big truck. When we got to the pier there was a long line and not much direction on where to go. After watching others for a few minutes, we figured it out and had our first of many experiences of feeling like herded cattle. Again, we were being as patient and positive as possible, but just wanted a little idea of how the system worked. There was a line to get onto the peir, another one to get into the building, and more lines inside the building. After reading about the funpass, I expected there to be a line for that, but never saw a sign, so we continued to follow the other cattle.
We had booked the guarantee status (ocean view) and so we didn't know what cabin we'd have. After making it thru the last section of lines we made it on the ship, but didn't know where to go! We waited in another line at the info desk for a few minutes. Then a sweet Carnival employee walked by the line and asked us what we needed. She found our room number quickly and we were on our way. We didn't know until we got to our cabin that we HAD received the upgrade and were so happy to have a balcony room. Finally, the fun part of the week began! Yea! TIP: The packing tips I got on this site and others helped us so much. We brought lots of plastic baggies and used them every day for our lunch. We ordered sandwiches from room service in the a.m. We even got bacon from the breakfast buffet to add to our sandwiches and picked up a couple of oranges or apples. We brought an empty water bottle to fill and even bagged some ice for our small insulated soft cooler. Doing this each day saved us so much money!
