Just got off of the Voyager of the Seas Barcelona round-trip Western Mediterranean Cruise and thought I would post a short review. We flew in the morning of 7/11 on Delta on an uneventful flight. Checked in to The 5 Rooms hotel in Barcelona. It is a small boutique hotel located about a block off Playa Cataluyna. Very quiet location, but close enough to the action. The room was very nice, and it included a light breakfast. Boarded the ship around 4 pm and our room was ready. We had a promenade room 8301. Room was plenty big, my only complaint was that drawer space was limited. Promenade view was neat, and having the little bit of extra room was nice, also an extra couch. We heard no noise from the promenade. Food on the ship was better than I expected, and there were some great choices. For some reason I preferred the appetizers to the entrees. One night I even got the scallop risotto appetizer as my entree and my server had them make the portion larger. There was a strawberry meringue dessert that was low-fat, low-cal, and delicious. Escargot was great as well. A giant shrimp entree was enjoyed by the table. Breakfast was good as well, but we would just grab pastries and run to meet for our tours, so I can't really speak for the full breakfast. Most lunches were out in the ports. Our service was wonderful and I sure do miss it now! Ports: Barcelona - our second day in Barcelona (7/12) we did the HOHO bus which was great for what we wanted to see. If we had felt up to it the day before I would have like to have done the 2 day ticket so we could have actually stopped at some of these sights, but there was not enough time. We were too jet-lagged the first day to enjoy sightseeing. We did do the food market which was amazing. Actually ate lunch there and had some of the freshest seafood I've ever had. Villefranche - just beautiful! We did the boat sponsored Eze-MonteCarlo-Monaco tour. Great tour guide, and great sights. Loved the ride on the Grande Corniche. We really liked this stop. The lunch was provided at the cafe right outside the casino - just delicious. Florence - this was a bad day! 57 knot winds kept us from docking at Livorno, we had to go to La Spezzia and tender. Many people got sick from the rocking. We did not tender until 12:30 pm. We did the Taste of Florence tour through the boat and it was very rushed. I feel we did not get a true "Taste of Florence" due to the nature of the day. Oh well... Rome - fabulous - we did a Romeinlimo tour with a small group and it was just great. Saw everything we needed to see with our great guide Fabio. I wish we had done every tour like this. Rome was one of my favorite ports. Naples - did the Amalfi Coast drive and Pompeii. Be prepared to be astounded by the drive. Also maybe a little motion sick! We stopped in Amalfi and shopped a little. Then ate at a restaurant that was included in the tour. Delicious food again. Pompeii was so interesting but very hot! Be sure to bring a hat and some water! Garbage situation in Naples seemed better. Palermo - our least favorite stop. We did a half day tour through the boat that took us to the Cathedrals. The churches were beautiful, but the city seemed dirty and there was a lot of graffiti. We were so exhausted by this day that we were just ready to relax. Day at Sea - very windy and hard to sit out by the pool. Also hard to find a chair because of chair hogs (unfortunately). Entertainment - we only made it to one show but it was great. I would have liked to have seen more, but it is a very exhausting itinerary. Overall, cruise was great. Only a few downfalls - organization on the day we had to tender (Florence) was not good at all. I think they were very surprised to have such weather. Also, the chair hogs at the pool. But other than that, a fabulous vacation of a lifetime!
