We just returned from the inter island NCL cruise on Pride of America. First of all, I have to tell you that we were upgraded from a balcony stateroom to the Owner's suite, which was really sweet! I am truly grateful to NCL and our travel agency for choosing us for that upgrade. The travel there was without incident, but, if I ever did it again, I would go a few days ahead to get used to the time change. Trying to see ALL OF HONOLULU THE DAY WE LEFT THE SHIP WAS REALLY FRUSTRATING. I made arrangements online with a lei greeting and transfers for our arrival. That was great, I did not have to worry about having cash for taxi etc. I am glad we did since there was No lei greeting for us on the ship. Since we arrived at 2:30 and did not sail until 8:00, there was no line checking in for the cruise. Since we were booked into the Owners' suite we were given a VIP invitation to a cocktail party where we met our Concierge. We were able to relax and have all our restaurant arrangements made for us for the entire week. I was highly disappointed that there were only a few places you could eat without a sur charge. I have cruised before and did not expect that. We made arrangements for the main dining room only. The suite was FANTASTIC! Honestly, the best way to sail. I had a king sized bed all to myself! There was a hot tub on the deck, but, I was too tired each day to use it! We made only one of our dinner reservations because we got better service in our suite! Marvin C. was the best Butler ever! Anything we needed we got! We did try the buffet once for lunch and once for breakfast, BIG Mistake! The service was slow and rude and the food was not worth the hassle of trying to get through the crowd! I had Marvin bring my breakfast each day to the suite and a few nights he served the full dining room meal to us as well. We had friends on the same ship, so they ate with us a few times in our suite and we were not disappointed. I have visited Hawaii (ten years ago) and was so excited to take my son for his high school graduation. Boy, have things changed? I found the service anywhere you went, to be rude and lacking...from K-mart to Pearl Harbor no one in the service industry seemed to like their job. Mexico is a much better bang for your buck! I was embarrassed that the very beautiful Hawaiian islands are part of the US. We rented a car in most ports and was not unhappy we did. Driving through the islands was relaxing and gorgeous. We enjoyed a lovely luau at Smith's. We missed the Fern Grotto tour because I locked my keys in the trunk at Piopu Beach! Of course it only took the rental car people three hours to drive 25 miles to bring my another one! Who knew that a Mustang convertible would not have a pop lock in the glove box? My Miata has one...what was I thinking? Disembarkation was a breeze since our Concierge James gave us VIP tags for our luggage. After we got our rental car we took off for Pear Harbor.....don't go on a Saturday! We waited for three and a half hours. If was worth the wait, but, every thing else we wanted to see was closing by the time we got out. Another reason the get to Honolulu earlier in the week before the ship sails! Getting through the Honolulu airport was a disaster, for the sake of time, I will not subject you to that, just know this, if I ever go to Hawaii again, I will fly straight to Kauai and stay there, since it was the loveliest of the islands! I would not go NCL. If I had not been upgraded, I have a feeling I would not have felt I got my money's worth.
