Sail Date: Apr 2008

We flew to Rome four days before the start of the cruise and stayed in a small apartment we had rented via the internet in Trastevere (across the Tiber), so I can't comment on Oceania's pre-cruise hotels, except to say that those with whom we spoke found the three facilities to be just fine and appreciated having the transportation from Rome to Civitavecchia arranged for them. We shared a van (Roma Shuttle) with two other couples whom we had "met" via the roll call for our sailing on the Cruise Critic web site. It cost 160 euro plus tip, and seemed quite reasonable to the six of us, especially considering the alternative of $90 euro a couple for a private car transfer.

EMBARKATION: This could not have been smoother. We exited our van, entered a tented area where our bags were screened and tickets reviewed and then boarded the ship. We were in a PH 3 (least expensive penthouse suite) cabin, 8059. Once onboard, there are separate lines for different cabin categories which was nice, but in our case not too important as the six of us were the only ones checking in at the time we arrived. After the photo taking and issuing of ID cards, we strolled leisurely to our cabin.

CABIN: When we entered, we were blown away. The cabin was HUGE, and on the two-person dining table were a stem of orchids, a bottle of Mumm's and a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries. We learned later that this is standard in the PH and above cabins and that if you aren't a champagne drinker, you can turn it in for a bottle of wine at dinner (as if!). Booking the PH cabin was a big splurge for us because the trip was a surprise for my husband's 60th birthday. We saw other smaller cabins, though, and they, too, were lovely.

Cabin Review

Cabin PH

Plenty of closet/drawer space, generously-size bathroom, near crew space but not a problem.
