My husband and I are in our mid 50's. This is our 14th cruise on various cruise lines. We live in Vancouver so we were dropped off at Canada Place and were on the ship in about 45 minutes. All of our other cruises were on larger ships, but the Statendam was very elegant and didn't show her age of 15 years at all. We had an outside cabin, which was great because you are close to land a lot of the time and can actually see something besides water. The cabin was fine - it would be nice if they didn't put the bed under the window so you can look out the window without kneeling on the bed. Our room steward kept everything very clean. I didn't care for the bath tub, very tiny and a REALLY big step in and out. The food was very good in the Dining Room, however breakfast seemed very disorganized. Our Dining Room waiter was downright rude. He brought us our dessert menus before everyone at the table was finished their entree and he chastised us for being late for dinner when we had gone to watch the show. That is perhaps my biggest complaint. The shows (which were great) start at 7 p.m., they were 45 - 55 minutes long and the late dinner seating is a 7:45. How are you not supposed to be late??!! The Cruise Director said that he would notify the Dining Room that we would be late, but that message obviously didn't get to the waiters. I complained about this on board and the waiter apologized, but the service still didn't get any better. The Lido Restaurant was like a prison line for food. One long line and they sort of slop the food on the plate. I am never sure if you don't want an omelette, is it ok to bypass the people waiting for them? Some people get really upset and treat you like you are butting in. And nothing in this place was hot, even when they put the metal plate cover over your food. We took shore excursions in all the ports and enjoyed them all. The weather was great - only a sprinkle of rain at the glacier, but sun and slightly overcast everywhere else. I got up every morning to do the Walk-a-mile and earn my dam dollar and at the end of the cruise, there was nothing to get for the six dollars I had earned (the list started at 10 dollars!!) We didn't find the crew very friendly and no one seemed to go out of their way for you. It took me till the 4th dinner to get green tea in the Dining Room and one morning we were seated and people were going to join us for breakfast. He asked if we could have a window seat (there were several available) and the waiter said "If we wanted a window, we should come earlier.) We met some really nice people on this cruise and lots of first time cruisers. Getting off the ship was great. As we live in the Vancouver area, we chose the carry your luggage off option, got a cab and were home by 8:15. That's the way to do it!! I think that it would be while before we cruised with HAL again and then only if they were going somewhere unusual.

Cabin Review

Explorations library always cold. Cabin 644 very warm even with thermostat turned past the end of blue.
