We are a just-retired couple, mid 50s. Previously we traveled Carnival and 3 cruises on Holland America. After watching RCL commercials, I decided to try RCL. My husband and I were a little worried, because the commercials all showed fast paced "Get Out There" rock-climbing wall etc. Since we live in the Houston area, and it is a quick drive to the port in Galveston, we thought we would TRY RCL. This was a decision a long time coming, because we are in love with HAL and thought no other line could compare. I am here to tell you, RCL is for Everyone! I would recommend RCL to young, to families with children of all ages, and to seniors. Driving to Galveston is a breeze on Sunday, and there is plenty of parking. We parked at Lighthouse for $40,00 for a 7 day cruise, because we found a $10.00 off coupon in the paper. We were picked up immediately, and I thought the decision was great. However, on our return, we waited in very hot, humid sunshine to be picked up. Once the van finally arrived, he said they would just drop all of us off in one spot and just pile all the luggage together. You guessed it, one of our bags was taken by someone else and we were left very upset. The Lighthouse employees were very unconcerned, and said it happens all the time and it is usually discovered and returned. Don't let your bags out of your sight from the ship to the parking lot! Embarkation was a breeze. We were on board about 12:30pm and we followed others to the Windjammer to eat lunch. After lunch, we could go to our room at 1:00pm. We were pleased to see the ship in great condition. Everything was clean, and in good repair. Our dining time was 8:00pm, which is too late for us so we asked for and were granted the Main dining time (5:30pm). That time is a little early, but we would rather have early than late. We had Alena and Elena from Russia in the Carmen Dining room and in the Windjammer. Service was flawless from both. The food was very good and in plentiful supply. We felt the desserts were better than HAL which is saying something for us. We did eat once at Johnny Rockets, and it was excellent too! Our waiter was Jose (I can't remember where his card said he was from) and he did a great job. I ordered a Cherry Coke, which I have not had in many years. My husband tasted the coke and said it was the best he could ever remember having. (I think it just brought back memories.) Service was outstanding in every area except one-our cabin steward. He was not very friendly, and we did not receive our daily compass until late afternoon the second day so we did not know to pick up ice show ticket that morning. Fortunately, we were able to go to a 4:30 show on Thursday (formal night). The ice show was wonderful, and I would highly recommend getting tickets. My husband thought all the production shows, the Magician, and the Comedians were great. It was nice to see something different, because on our Panama Canal cruise with HAL we saw the same show we saw on our Alaska Cruise. Our first port of call was Montego Bay, Jamaica. Since I visited Jamaica before, and visited Dunns River Falls, we decided to stay on board. Our decision was really easy, because I read too many bad posts about Jamaica. My husband and I played a round of golf on the Voyager Dunes course. It was great! No one was around, so we could take our time. The course is very prettily done with statues and park bench. Our next stops-Grand Cayman and Cozumel, were great shopping trips. Our only problem was getting back on the ship. Each time they told us our pictures were reversed on our cards. They said they were corrected, but when we tried to get back on in Cozumel, the photos were still reversed. My husband works out everyday, and his opinion of the facility - Loud/horrible music, messy towels in mens steam room. The Library on RCL is really a joke. No staff is ever in attendance, so the first day we had to walk down to guest relations to get a sheet with instructions/prices for the internet. I had to help several other passengers set up their internet accounts. The last day of the cruise I finally saw the sheets posted in the Library (too late for us, but maybe the next cruise). We did like HAL Library much better, they even had DVDs for us to use in our rooms. We also like that HAL lets you wait in your cabin until it is time to disembark. RCL requires everyone to vacate cabins by 8:00am and wait in one spot. We were very unlucky in that we had the LAST disembarkation color, and some elevator or something was broken (we were never informed what) and getting off the ship was very late (11:30). We had to sit in the theatre for several hours. Not a pleasant ending to a very pleasant cruise.
