We just got back from a 7 day cruise on Pride of America. I was concerned with the past rain and rough seas but my prayers were answered. We had PERFECT weather and glass seas the whole week. We arrived in Honolulu at 1:15am to the hotel due to delayed flight in LAX. The next day I called NCL and they told me we couldn't board until after 4pm. People had started boarding as early as noontime, however I have boarded late before and it works out great. We took a 3 hour tour on Oahu before the cruise to burn some time. If you book a tour see if they will drop you off at the port afterwards, will save you about 18 dollars there, just do it at the time of booking. We didn't know that so had already arranged transport to the cruise port. Advantage of getting on ship late? NO LINES.. there was only 2 other folks getting on after 6pm.. ship leaves at 8pm. Easy to get on and not stand in line.

I booked most of my shore excursions online and car rentals MONTHS before the cruise to: #1 save money and not have to wait on a tour bus load of folks to get on/off a bus and be forced to visit the crappy gift shops. #2 we were able to go to all the national volcanic parks and then even eat a lunch at a picnic table out in the open where a pair of mating NENE's came right up to us. We saw more and did a LOT at less than $40.00 a day for a rental car plus gas or snacks and a picnic lunch.

I booked a laui outside of the ships offering.. it was a little more expensive but it was right on the Pacific facing the sunset.. we saw 2 whales coming up out of the water.. you can't order that kind of perfection. THe cruise Laui was inland.. and other folks loved it but that left my husband and I with a near empty ship for a while and an opportunity to eat at Little Italy.
