We returned on January 19th 2008 from a Discovery land and cruise package. We were very impressed with both the land package that Discovery arranged and the cruise.
We booked our own flights to Buenos Aries on Aerolineas Argentinas. Mistake! All the negative things on the internet about this airline are all true! The flight price was very reasonable, but you get what you pay for.
Upon arrival at our Hotel the Sofitel (part of the land package) all went well. The Sofitel let us check in at 6:00 AM with no extra cost and we were so appreciative! We could sleep for a few hours before we went out on the streets of BA. A warning with Buenos Aries...very bad for thefts. Several people on our cruise got robbed in broad daylight in public. Watch your stuff. Don't carry a purse and wear your backpack in front!!
The Discovery tour rep was excellent and extremely helpful. She had a desk in the lobby and was readily available to us. All the transfers to our flight to More
and from Ushuaia were handled well.
We upgraded to a promenade cabin which was large and had lots of storage space. The bathroom was full size and included a tub. We had a good size window and curtains that blocked the light. Since we had 20 hours of daylight that was a good thing. The service was excellent. The cabins spotless! The food was OK. We have cruised on Holland America, Princess, Celebrity and NCL. If you want lots of gourmet food then go on Holland America or Celebrity. Discovery's food was plentiful and good.
The Ship is older and basic. It is well maintained, but not fancy.
The Guest speakers were excellent! The entertainment was fair, but we enjoyed it. The wine list was very good and well priced. Internet was $24 for 4 hours. No one tried to force you to "buy" things. The craft activities were free! The service in all areas was above average.
We got off the ship 4 times in the Zodiacs and the scenery was unbelievable. Antarctica was the cruise of a life time.
We loved MV Discovery and would sail with them again. Less
