Introduction

This was our sixteenth cruise and the third on Norwegian. It was our first opportunity to experience "Freestyle Cruising." A year ago, we spent a few wonderful days in Cabo San Lucas and we were looking forward to experiencing the other three ports on the cruise for the first time. We were scheduled to fly to L.A. from Atlanta early Saturday morning. A winter storm was slated to hit the town after midnight Friday. Just the threat of bad weather in Atlanta can guarantee the airlines will cancel flights. My wife, Joanne, scrambled and moved our flight to a red eye out late Friday to give us a travel safety margin. Joanne booked us a room for the night at the Sheraton Gateway that is right there at the airport. The hotel runs a 24/7 free shuttle from the terminals to the hotel and it runs every fifteen minutes. The room was $129 a night and we would recommend the Sheraton. We had also booked the shuttle Norwegian operates between the airport and the ship for $50 per person round trip. This worked well both coming and going. LAX is about 20 miles and about a 30 minute drive from the pier in Long Beach.
