Our recent 8 day cruise on the Norwegian Star was our first and definitely last with NCL. While trying to be as objective as possible there is very little in the way of positive comments that I can make. From the time that we embarked, at approximately 12 noon in Los Angeles, when we were advised that the cabins would not be ready for occupation until 2.00pm, our cruise on the Norwegian Star went rapidly downhill. The buffet area on embarkation day was extremely crowded and the food was mediocre. Our verandah cabin was not clean, it really required everything to be taken out and replaced, and was more like a 3rd rate motel room. The food in general was of indeterminate quality and in no way resembled the food that we have experienced on other cruise lines. The buffet area, known as the market cafe, was particularly poor. I also heard comments regarding poor quality food in Cagney's Steakhouse, one of the restaurants where a premium is charged, although we did not personally dine in any restaurants where a premium was charged. In addition to these factors my wife succumbed to the Norwalk virus that affected many of our fellow cruisers. It was so bad that the medical staff attended those people who caught the virus in their cabins and imposed a 24 hour quarantine. I cannot speculate on how people contracted the virus but the Captain himself was making regular broadcasts emphasizing the importance of hygiene. All in all we felt that overall the ship was not very clean and the food was of poor quality, so NCL was unable to get these 2 basic components done correctly and I am not surprised that the Norwalk virus had such an impact on those who cruised on the Norwegian Star. We will certainly never travel with NCL again.
