This cruise was the 3rd for my wife and I- our 2nd on Carnival. Although this wasn't the best cruise we've been on, it was still a fun cruise for us. I didn't check to see when the Triumph was last refurbished but do believe that she is due for another one fairly soon. Evidence of this was seen throughout our cruise both in our cabin and in the common areas of the ship. The most annoying example was in our shower where if you stepped on the tiles in a certain area there was a "clunking" noise as though there was no support underneath. Our tv stopped working one night, we're not sure why but after a call to maintenance failed to fix the problem my wife simply unplugged it the next morning, plugged it back in and the problem was solved. There was a note left for us the previous night saying maintenance had been in the room to fix the problem and had found nothing wrong. I had come across tiles that were coming apart throughout the ship. Up on the lido deck there were scratches on the moulding around the tables, ripped upholstery and chairs that were nearing the end of their service life. The crew were simply polite and nothing more. On past cruises we've been entertained by overly friendly staff but this week the crew merely did their job and nothing more. Smiles were a bit of a rarity on this cruise and that surprised us for Carnival. We were also disappointed by the food. We ate most of our meals in the dining room and it wasn't often when were satisfied by our meals. We're not picky people but there were times where the food was undercooked or late in arriving (there was a power outage in the kitchen we were told). The buffet food was simply ok. We've been served better food on the lido deck before but this week it was disappointing. The entertainment was fine and what we have grown to expect from cruise lines. The singers aren't the best caliber but we were entertained nonetheless. We were also treated to a comedian and a magic show that was very entertaining. The one thing that really bothered us on this cruise was the U.S. customs clearance exercise that everyone on the ship had to endure in St. Thomas whether you stayed on the ship in port or got off. Due to the lack of a proper port facility on the island to clear the passengers everything had to be done on the ship. This took us a good 45 mins to get through. I understand this is beyond Carnival's control however a cruise ship really isn't designed for this kind of procedure. Half Moon Cay, Carnival's private island was a great destination- our 2nd time to this piece of paradise. We enjoyed the beach and the food that was served in the dining hall. Considering that food has to be carried from the ship to the island we were very impressed by this operation. We were also relieved when our ship was able to dock at the pier in St. Thomas as opposed to some of the other cruise ships who had to tender to the island. All in all, with the problems we found on this ship we still had a great time. Having travelled with Carnival in the past we know what this cruise line is capable of and wouldn't hesitate to travel with them in the past. Most of these issues can be solved with a refit of the ship. I don't know what can be said of the crew however, perhaps the ones we encountered were nearing the end of their current contract and were in need of a vacation (we all can relate to this can't we?)
