Traveled with children

My extended family (group of 17) booked our cruise on the Conquest approximately one year prior to our sailing on December 30th. My husband and I are in our 40's with three children (ages 16, 11 and 9) and no prior cruising experience. My extended family have all been on numerous cruises (my parents who are in their 70's being the most "veteran" cruisers in our family with more trips than I can count - Oceania being their favorite cruise line).

Embarkation: We live in Austin, but decided to drive to Galveston on Saturday afternoon and stayed at the Comfort Inn Stewart Beach with others in our party. We took the shuttle over to the port about 10:30 am and had a surprisingly easy time with embarkation despite leaving a hanging bag at the hotel and then having to take a taxi back to the hotel to retrieve the missing bag. Fortunately, my 11 year realized (probably because it contained his dreaded jacket/tie) that we had left the bag just as we arrived at the port. My husband and oldest son retrieved the bag while others in our party went ahead and boarded. From there, my family basically walked right onto the ship. I think we spent perhaps 30 minutes from the time we entered the port door until we boarded the ship itself.

Accommodations: My family had two adjoining rooms on the Riviera deck - cabins 1422 and 1424. The rooms were more spacious than I had anticipated with really great storage. Having two rooms (keeping the doors open most of the time) made for a very comfortable stay. I think that I would recommend staying on a higher level deck (others in our party were on 6) because I felt like we spent quite a bit of time just navigating the ship corridors. We stayed towards the rear of the ship and did hear a fair amount of engine noise. Also, we had several days of rough seas (one night was especially turbulent). I'm not sure that being on a lower deck minimized the rocking of the ship. However, I was told by numerous members of the crew that our cruise encountered uncharacteristically rough seas which I am certain were felt on every level of the ship! I would like to try the balcony rooms in the future or the family rooms with the larger picture windows. To tell you the truth, we never actually met our cabin steward (and this was OK with us). However, I can tell you that he was an extremely hardworking individual who kept our two rooms immaculate and inviting each day. We were so impressed/amazed by how hard the entire Conquest crew works! I found each crew member to be friendly, conscientious and very diligent workers.
