Please read prior passengers reviews before you book this cruise. They are pretty much right on! The service was acceptable, but the food is not very good, and the specialty restaurants are not worth the price. The ship's public rooms and dining rooms are freezing, so bring a sweater! The sewer smell that many other reviews referred to started on the 3rd day of sailing. I imagine that it is not one specific problem, but occurs on every sailing. Luckily it did not affect our room, but I know many others were complaining about it!
Some of the shore excursions were great. My husband loved the helicopter on Hilo, as well as the Harley "Rumble through the Jungle" on Kauai. But we rented a Harley on Kona for $99 a day, and saw the island together. It was much less expensive than the shore excursion-just take a taxi to the Harley dealer! We rented a car on Maui and 4 of us did the "Road to Hana" for the price of the daily car rental ($51), vs the crowded mini van at $119 each. My in laws did the submarine excursion ($92) on Kona and saw perhaps a half dozen fish in the 45 minutes! Not worth it. In many cases, renting a car is the way to go. And you can rent directly from Hertz, Alamo, etc-they all come and pick up at the ship! And it is less expensive.
The thing that saved the trip was that 2 months prior to sailing, we were offered an upgrade to a suite at about a 40% savings. The VIP services included in the upgrade were worth the price! The room was a penthouse suite, and it was the size of two regular cabins! We had a butler, Jenny, who was fantastic, and at our service 24/7. She brought room service (anything, even off the menu choices) in 20 minutes, even when the room service line was perpetually busy (we had her direct phone number). We had no wait getting on or off the ship with the VIP check in. Enjoyed the VIP cocktail reception with the officers. Loved the coffee/cappuccino machine in the room!
