My husband and I had our first experience on a cruise ship on Pride of America. After travelling all the way from Australia we stayed in Honolulu for 4 days at Waikiki Parc Hotel, which was great. We started our cruise on the Saturday and the embarkation, ship, and the staff were first class. We had booked an outside moderate room because I suffer from claustrophobia and needed a window. The room was lovely until the ship got under way. The noise inside the cabin was unbelievable and we found wooden wedges had previously been pushed up between the ceiling and the wall obviously to stop the noise. We found the same problem, that staff were very nice until you had a complaint. After a sleepless night we made our complaint the next day and maintenance staff listened to the noise, removed the wedges, and reception staff told us we had to move to another room while they removed the ceiling. We were then downgraded to an inside room with no window. The rest of our cruise was filled with anxiety as I could not cope with going into that tiny room. It did ruin our holiday as we had both just retired and this was our gift to each other. The housekeeping staff, catering staff, food, excursions, and the ship itself was fantastic, but this was enough to turn us off ever going on another cruise ship. We would go back to Honolulu tomorrow without a problem. Incidentally, for the inconvenience of paying for an outside room and being downgraded to an inside room (and there is a tremendous difference) the reception staff took $100 off our account.
