I feel that I must say this was my 1st cruise and I'm sure we had the cheapest room at $695 per person. I went with a group of friends and we arrived in N.Y. City, Friday, Sept 14th early in the afternoon. We stayed at small and very modest hotel on 80th Ave on the upper west side.It was on on the corner and some rooms had a view of the park and river. We spent most of the day in Central Park and the gay district for dinner. The next morning we went back to Central Park, the Today show, and Bass Pro, where I learned how to fly fish. We got back to the hotel about 1:30pm and took a cab to the port. They had us line-up like cattle, which I didn't like. It seem to work out fine. I left my passport in my suitcase that I checked in with the port. Can you say amateur? I was told to bring my passport to the purser office once I got my baggage. My bags arrived shortly before dinner. I went to the purser office the next day and was told I'll need it for Canada. I only needed it for US Customs.

I was one level one the Rivera in room 1390. It was larger than I expected as was the shower. I'm a large guy and that was a concern for me. We left on time at 4:00 pm and I saw Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. I went down stairs before we went under the bridge, friends said that it looked like we had just inches between the ship and the bridge(don't miss it). We dressed for dinner and went to the wrong restaurant before finding the right one.At table# 440 I order New York Strip and was disappointed with the lack of quality of the steak and meal. The salad was very modest and they forgot the dressing and most other sauces with the meals. I also tried the buffet and found almost the same menu everyday. There were 3 or 4 desert and some cheese. At the beginning tables were cleared and cleaned quickly. Toward the end the staff was not as active. I felt that they were understaffed. I found out that they are dry-docking in 3 week to over haul the ship and half the staff would stay on the other would go on vacation. Our group had 4 tables at dinner and we moved from table to table. I ate at 3 tables during my stay. One waiter was very good, the rest lack energy or desire. One helper to our main waiter was Luis from Peru he was great and I wish he was our waiter.

I went to the gym on the second day. There was all of these list of activities. I wish they would have listed prices. The steam wasn't always working and sometimes I could not find an attended to turn on the stream-room, it took a key and I was informed over and over that it was not their job. The gym open at 8:00 AM and the hot would be cold. I wished that they would have turned them on before the gym opened. Our group met 7:00PM every night for drinks in the (Ioain Room?) The cigar bar. we had about 30 people plus other guest not part of our group and they had only one waitress. We usually got only one drink ( she wasn't much for making the rounds. We did have some excellent service from time to time. Just not that often. I heard that from other seasoned travelers. I did laundry one day and met a guy from Houston. He said that I should not judge Carnival from this cruised. That the ones from Texas were always wonderful. I did have a good time, but I always do. I guess from the Carnival commercials I was expecting more.
