About us: We are in our mid-to-late 40's with two daughters aged 16 and 14. This is our 4th cruise on Royal Caribbean, all of which have been on Voyager-class ships, and our 2nd cruise on the Mariner. Additionally, we have sailed on 4 other cruise lines.

Pre-cruise: Our flight from JFK to MCO on Thursday August 23rd was pleasant and without problems, however we'll try to avoid Delta airlines in the future because they changed their schedule several times, resulting in us being forced into a very inconvenient return-flight time. Although we've had positive experiences renting a car from Budget in the past, Avis had a better rate this time, so we decided to give them a try. Picking up the car at the airport was quick and painless, and we were extremely satisfied with their service! We used discount coupons from a popular wholesale club, which entitled us to a one category car upgrade.

We had vouchers for Radisson, so we booked a suite at their Melbourne Beach location, which is about 25-30 minutes south of the port. (We didn't choose the Radisson in Port Canaveral because it is not oceanfront. As well, it was sold-out for the weekend). The hotel is beautiful and entirely renovated after suffering hurricane damage several years ago. It is very peaceful and uncrowded; there were times when we had the pool/jacuzzi and multi-level decking all to ourselves. We never shared it with more than one or two other families. We ordered the poolside lunch one day, and it was excellent! Although we loved the hotel itself, we are not likely to choose it again because the ocean was too rough for swimming and the beach was more suitable for surfers. As well, it's in a mostly residential area, so there isn't much to see or do nearby. On the plus side, Walmart is located across the street, where we were able to buy snacks and beverages to stock our suite's kitchen. Friendly's (which has a wonderful weekday breakfast special) and a few other inexpensive family-style restaurants are conveniently located across the street too. We drove up to Cocoa Beach each night for dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant, A New York Pizza House, located on Route 520 and A1A, diagonally across from Ron Jon's Surf Shop.
