My wife, my 15 year old daughter, her 16 year old girl friend and I cruised Norwegian Sun, Inside Passage to Alaska, from Vancouver on August 5, 2007. We flew to Vancouver on Westjet Airlines from Vancouver the morning of the flight.. The flight was very nice and security actually was relatively fast. Upon arrival, we took a limousine to Canada Place. The cost was 45 dollars. We arrived at 11:00 and priority treatment. Security and customs were a breeze. Getting on board the Sun was also easy. We only waited in a short line to sign in and only about 20 minutes to board. We went to the buffet to have lunch. The spa was good but beware. The fellow doing the teeth whiting wore gloves but never took them off when he handled the money and then stuck them into another persons mouth. The instrument used in pedicures were also not heat sterilized. We loved the ship! It was not too big, and it was very easy to get around. It was not an elegant ship, but it was also very comfortable, classy, relaxing - just perfect, in our opinion! I must put in a plug for the workers and crew. Every one of them made it a point to speak and smile when they saw us. They made sure we were comfortable and we were enjoying ourselves. It seemed like they were enjoying themselves, too. They were always friendly and helpful. If only the people we encounter in our everyday lives were so inclined. We all found the food to be fantastic. The kids loved the 24 hour room service and my wife and I really loved the seven seas dining room which we ate most meals at. We heard nothing but praise. Fresh baked rolls, meticulous attention to detail and souffles to die for. The restaurants on board were at par with the Grand Princess we cruised at in the Mediterranean two years ago.. The entertainment was wonderful. The Jean Ann Ryan Company was superb. And Whit Haydn, the magician, was nothing short of spectacular. We had a penthouse suite, with one room for the girls and one for us. There was a huge washroom with a separate whirlpool tub and a shower. When did not know if the balcony would get much use but it did - for all but two days when rain prevented us from using it. Yes, it was cool but we dressed for it. The beds were pretty comfortable but the girls had a bit of trouble getting used to the movement. There is loads of storage space. We loved the freestyle dining. We cruised Princess, and they had this option plus a formal assigned style as well.. Freestyle is the only way to go. We never had to wait in line. We had a choice which restaurant we wanted to dine it each night. Although the meals were basically the same in each of the main dining rooms, the ambiance in each was different. We could join others for dinner or dine alone. We tried one specialty restaurant, with Japanese style cooking. The chefs clowned around a lot. The seven seas dining room was great. If you can't find something you like to eat, then you're just too hard to please. We loved the chilled fruit soups - chilled banana, chilled Mango and chilled blueberry. We tried the tapas bar one night but felt it was only o.k. I used the Internet cafe. It was in a nice area with lots of windows and comfortable seating. The service was pretty slow, however, so we discouraged the kids from using it. The gallery shops were o.k. the photogallery was good but we grew tired of having our picture taken a zillion times. The quality of pictures in the photo gallery was excellent. I did a lot of research before deciding on which excursions to book. We took ourselves through Ketchikan - no tour was necessary. Ketchikan gets 12 and ½ feet of rain ayear so be prepared. In Juneau, we booked Whale Watching. My wife loves whales and was not disappointed! The weather was overcast, but the beauty breathtaking. We saw some whales and sea lions. Put the highlight of this trip is going up the fjord to view the Sinclair Glacier and watch icebergs being calved. We were amazed how far up the fjord the could go!!! In Skagway, we took The White Pass train and gold panning expedition. Great views. And some gold to take home. Fantastic. We picked the absolutely best excursions for the money. We had no disappointments in any of them. Getting off the ship was really easy. We packed everything we didn't need for the next morning in our bags for pick up. The next morning we went to the buffet for breakfast. Then we just relaxed on deck for a while. When we walked off the ship, we found our luggage quickly. We then took a taxi to Hertz rent a car, rented a car and went to our hotel (The Terminal City). We unpacked our luggage, then went to Stanley Park. We saw the aquarium (where we saw the beluga whale show) and the went on a carriage ride. Earlier this year a hurricane destroyed many of the Douglas firs in the park. Then we went To Granville island. Getting around was easy - I introduced my wife to a GPS. No more arguments about where we go or how to get there. I will definitely cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line again. They are classy, but unpretentious. They may not be the most exquisite cruise line around, but they made me feel special and comfortable on my vacation.
