I recently completed the Celebrity Century 12 day Baltic Cruise. Although I was interested in the cruise line offers for a hotel in Amsterdam for a stay after the cruise, I was disappointed that there was only was option. Reviews of the hotel on www.tripadvisor.com were not impressive so I made arrangements for a hotel on my own. The transport from the airport to the port, booked through Celebrity was seamless, however in retrospect the transfer could have been made without the added cost. The embarkation process was long and not very well organized compared to a previous cruise experience. I was very pleased with the inside cabin, which was nicely decorated and gave the illusion of a larger size and of light. The conversion of the twin beds to a single bed was accomplished very efficiently by the cabin staff. The bathroom was a larger than anticipated size and was remarkable for good water pressure in the shower. Closet and drawer space likewise was more than adequate. I was aware prior to the cruise that the ship did not have public laundry facilities. For a 12 day cruise, the use of the ship's laundry and ironing services was an unfortunate only option. Service by the cruise ship staff overall, whether the cabin staff, the dining room servers, or the many other individuals, was exceptional. I was disappointed only by the attitude of one of the excursion staff who seem disinterested in the arrangements I was trying to make for St Petersburg. The other individual who stood out as a disinterested was the assistant maitre d. He asked me specifically about the food on the cruise. I responded honestly that although the beef dishes seemed to be the best choices, that the food in general was not to the standard that I was lead to expect. Rather than responding to my requested comment, he simply changed the subject to the midnight buffet. My overall impression of the food was that there was no flavor. Salad dressings were especially poor. Much of the seafood, including the lobster tails were overcooked to the point of a rubber quality. The food high points were the beef, always cooked and presented as requested, the breakfast waffles, the sushi bar and the bread products. I will be interested in other guests' comments re the quality of the food, although my opinion was shared by others with whom I spoke. As to the issue of the Celebrity main dining room dress code which has a topic which generated heated discussions on Cruise Critic, I was pleasantly surprised. On formal nights, the majority of the men wore suits and the women wore cocktail wear. Everyone was more dressy than usual. Although there were some men in tux and women in floor-length gowns, I did not appreciate any conflict between individuals re attire. To each, his or her own. My final comment is related to the cruise excursions. My preference is to explore ports on my own. Maps provided by the ship were so limited in detail that they were useless. Once I had time on the ship to research the various ports, walking and utilizing local hop on-hop off buses and canal buses served to be an exceptional way to see the sights. One more final comment. For an unknown reason, the port of Oslo was eliminated from the itinerary and replaced with Klaipeda, Lithuania. Klaipeda was rather obviously not accustomed to a large tourist population. This can be a good thing if one is able to stumble on local treasures. Unfortunately the day in Klaipeda fell on a Monday when all museums were closed. There was a wonderful sculpture park. I'm not likely to use Celebrity in the future, despite the overall exceptional staff and accommodations.
