My girlfriend and I recently returned from two weeks in Hawaii, during which time we took the seven day cruise on NCL's Pride of America. Before deciding to take the cruise (the first for both of us), we researched the ship and cruise line on the Internet, as well as talking to friends. We were concerned by the number of negative comments on the Internet, but decided to try it any way. We were glad we did. We are both low-maintenance travellers, who don't need to be pampered, and this cruise worked out really well for us. We especially liked the lack of time restrictions that you get with "Freestyle Cruising".

Our embarkation process was very quick and painless. After checking in and boarding the ship, we decided to explore the ship until our room was ready. This took about an hour, and our bags were delivered a couple of hours after that. Our room was on the port side of the 10th deck. The room was small, but well designed, so that we weren't tripping over each other. The bed was quite comfortable, and the room was clean and neat. Our chambermaid was very pleasant, and was able to handle any requests we made. The one maintenance call we made was a little slow in being dealt with (a plugged sink) but was sorted out the next morning while we were ashore.

The food was good and there was lots of variety. We mostly ate at the buffet restaurant and the specialty restaurants. Like all buffets, the amount and temperature of the food depended on how busy it was when we got there. There was plenty of selection, including the desserts, and we found them very tasty. Breakfast in the outdoor cafe at the stern of the ship was excellent. How often could you sit down to a nice freshly cooked piece of salmon with your cereal and rolls for breakfast? The Asian restaurant was great, and to our dismay we didn't discover it until the last night. We had no problems getting into the specialty restaurants, so long as we didn't insist on eating at 7pm, the busiest time. We were able to reserve as little at the day before in some cases.
