MSC Opera - Central America/Panama Canal

Sail Date: March 2007
Destination: Panama Canal & Central America
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

The embarkation was fine,we arrived later in the afternoon and had no trouble boarding. As a whole the service on the ship was average. We did have great service from our cabin steward Luc and our head waiter. The entertainment team was excellent and the best of any of our previous cruises. The theatre entertainment was very good except for the male and female headline singers. The singers in the public area lounges were far superior. The lounge entertainment in all the ship's lounges was excellent. Shore excursions were extremely over priced. We had 2 shore excursions canceled that we booked at the time of booking our cruise with M.S.C. and they would not refund on board ship. We had to fax cancellation letters in order to receive credit for them on our credit card after we arrived home. This took 2 weeks after we finished our cruise. Costa Maya Mexico: a must see, of the Myan ruins. Puerto Limon, Costa Rica: stay on board the ship unless you have to go to church. The city is very More dirty, people sleeping on the sidewalks and we saw more buzzards than fish at the local fish market on way back to the ship. Panama Canal shore excursion was excellent; bus ride and ferry thru the canal was very informative and an excellent tour. Santa Marta, Columbia: don't miss city tour and Bolivar's compound. Curacao: beautiful city for shopping. Samana: city tour not worth the money and tour too long, just spend the day at the beach.

The food was the worst we ever had on a cruise ship and we were aware of it before we took the cruise by reading previous reviews on this web site. The chefs just don't know how to cook meat. The beef and chicken were all overcooked, dry and very tough. We ate sea food and pasta for dinner every night. No free ice cream on ship except at dinner,no place to eat after last seating except for 2 gala buffet nights. Ship had 3 formal nights and only one casual night and the other nights was semi formal (coat or tie). Looked like everyone said screw you and dressed casual after 2nd night anyway. Public lounge rooms on ship are not conducive for all people to sit and view the entertainment. 1/2 of the chairs are facing away from the dance floor and the stage. You could throw your back out turning chairs around in all the lounges. This was a Big Band Cruise and who wants to sit with their back to the Tommy Dorsey Orch. and the dance floor. The rooms were very small compared to other cruise ships and the shower's are tiny. disembarkation took too long and afterwards we discovered we had numerous articles missing from our luggage especially cologne and lingerie. We have cruised on other major cruise lines and have found M.S.C. to be inferior! Less
