BACKGROUND INFO: This was cruise number seven for me, my third on Holland America. I also sailed on Carnival and with the Alaskan State Ferry. This was my first cruise that was longer than 7 days and a test to see if I would enjoy a longer cruise. This was also my 5th solo cruise.

TRAVEL TO PORT OF EMBARKATION: Since I work for an airline, I know the importance of leaving at least a day ahead. I flew into Fort Lauderdale the day before. On the day of the cruise, I used the hotel complimentary shuttle service to the port. No major traffic issues to the port due to the fact that our ship was the only one in port that day and we sailed out mid-week.

HOTEL INFORMATION EMBARKATION: I stayed at Sleep Inn in Dahia Beach. Some of the recent reviews are mixed on this hotel. I had no problems with the hotel and got what I wanted. A clean, safe hotel to stay one night. The hotel was in a good location. There's a Walgreen's right in front of the hotel, a Publix supermarket across the street with a nice wine selection, a dollar store and two restaurants. Since I was close to so much, I cancel my car rental and enjoyed what was in the area. Hollywood beach was two miles north of the hotel and cab fare was $8 each way. You can walk to the beach if you like, but since I was solo, I opt for a ride.
