While I am a very seasoned traveler, I have never experienced a cruise and was a bit apprehensive, especially because friends/family all regaled me with stories about their bad experiences. I have to say that the week I spent on the Getaway was incredibly enjoyable and relaxing and my experience was overall a positive one with very few exceptions.

The embarkation from the Port of Miami to the ship was quite effortless. I had downloaded my documents, got there on time, and found myself on board within an hour and my checked bag made its way to my cabin before 4:00 pm. Unfortunately, at the end of the week, disembarkation was not nearly so pleasant. Even though exit times were scattered, people were lined up and herded down to the deck, we weren't cleared on time so the waits were interminable, and checked bags were color coded for pick up but some passengers were never told that their baggage had been stored in another room,

As for the cruise itself, I have nothing but praise for the service and the staff. Contrary to what I have been told and what I've read online, the food was quite good, varied, plentiful and well prepared, and I sampled several restaurants including two premium ones. There really is something for everyone, from standard fare to French, Latin, Italian, Thai, etc.

Cabin Review

Studio Stateroom

The Getaway has a Studio Lounge area for solo travelers and provided a staff member to insure that we were well taken care of (although, personally, I find that if I choose to travel alone, I really don't need a babysitter, but he was helpful and not intrusive and some of the solo female passengers were very impressed with this). The housekeeping staff was very competent and always cordial. My only complaint is that I had an inside solo cabin and it was miniscule, dark and cramped. Not even a chair, and knees bumped up against the john wall. I suppose this is no big deal since I spent most of my time elsewhere but sleeping in a coffin-like, pitch black cabin was a bit disconcerting.
