They say "big is beautiful" for the Norwegian Breakaway, nothing could be further from the truth. Yes there were positives but quite frankly, the negatives left a lasting impression of our cruise. Firstly it took an age to embark and even longer to disembark. You queued for restuarants, battled for a table and cutlery at times in the buffet. Other restuarants filled quite quickly, especially around 7pm, and due to there being more restaurants you had to pay for, choice at premium times was a challenge. If you wanted to take in a show or other entertainment you had to pre-book. The remainder was again challenging if you wanted a seat, as these were at a premium and occupied most of the time, the Atrium being quite popular was always filled to capacity. The booking procedure for shows, restaurants and shore excursions, although advancing with technology and accessed through your cabin TV, did leave me wondering how the elderly managed with this process ?

I also got the impression that the company was more concerned with extracting as much money as they could possibly obtain from each passenger. I previously mentioned that there were more restaurants on board for which you were charged, than complimentary dining. You also had to pay for some of the entertainment, I've cruised twice before and not experienced this. You paid a mandatory gratuity for every drink, of which I considered to be expensive in the first place. And to top it all, they charge every passenger over the age of 3 years old, get this, a service charge of 12 dollars per person, per day. The whole time I was on board I felt like I was being fleeced !!!!. I could continue to write even more negatives but I think you get the message ?.

On the plus side the entertainment, for which we didn't pay, was very good. Especially liked Rock of Ages and some of the dance shows. The food was very good, especially in the Manhattan Restuarant but refused to use the restuarants that charged. All in all it was a disappointing end to our holiday. We had spent the previous week in Niagara Falls and New York, it was a shame we couldn't have stayed there. We spoke to dozens of other passengers, some of which were cruising for the first time, who stated they would not cruise again and plenty who stated they would not return to the Norwegian Breakaway.
