We are frequent NCL cruisers, and this was the fifth time we had been on the Gem. Don't let anyone fool you with talk of this being an "old" ship. We were on her inaugural weekend in late 2007. This is not an old ship, unless you consider seven and a half years old. We have cruised on other Jewel class ships and prefer the smaller size to the mega ships. They are constantly updating the decor, so her age doesn't show.
We had a great experience, but we also know what to expect and keep a good attitude. Cruises are not all inclusive and there are always add on costs, such as drinks and specialty restaurants.
Embarkation was smooth, but even the Latitudes line was long. We did what frequent cruisers do and avoided the buffet for the sail away. Instead, we ate at the Grand Pacific dining room and had a great meal. I had the shrimp burger with an addicting pretzel bun and hummus and bagel chips as an appetizer. It is a leisurely way to begin the trip but few cruisers know that they can have lunch in the dining room on the first day.
Mid ship is a good place to be if you are sensitive to movement. We were starboard so had a nice view of the pilot jumping fro. The ship to the pilot boat. The room is small, but it functional. The room starts to seem bigger the longer you stay in it. There is a coffee maker, mini bar and small t.v.
