We have been to this port on more than half of our Caribbean cruises and it has a nice close place to do some shopping just at the end of the pier. Don't get fooled by getting on what looks like a free shuttle to the "downtown area" it is about a one mile trip that they charge $4 per person each way and the destination is an area that looks like a poor mans farmers market. We didn't know about the charge until the driver pulled over at about the halfway point and collected the $4. We just stayed on after seeing the area we were to be dropped off at and payed the $4 for the return trip.  There are some good excursions available that we have done in the past here but decided to spend the time on the ship and a little port shopping.

St. Thomas

This port had a nice shopping area at the end of the pier and if you are a beach bunny you will enjoy the free beach that is also just at the end of the pier. The excursions available didn't pull us so we just did a little shopping and went back to the ship.

Grand Turk

This was a sail and snorkel trip on a private 40 sailboat. The owners (husband and wife team) were personable and knowledgeable. This excursion had a limit of 8 and was priced like a large group excursion. We ended up with only six and it was very enjoyable. You would have to book this as early as possible as it doesn't take much to sell out. The owners company name is Bowalie and if it does not appear on your cruise line as an excursion you may be able to book direct.

This is one of the worst ports that I have ever seen. At the end of the pier there is no state of the art shopping center but rather the poor shacks and individual shops that you would be leery being near. If it weren't for our excursion we would have stayed on the ship. As far as the excursion goes it consisted of a one hour ride each way along narrow winding roads with blind corners up 1900ft with almost no guard rails and sometimes only inches between the road and hundreds of feet drops. The tubing was only about 40 minutes long and had about four stops where you had to hold on to a line stretched across the river so that you could wait for the guides to catch up as each set of rapids had to have someone there to keep you from getting held up on the rocks.The people working the excursions and driving the van were all very nice but that doesn't make up for the poor experience.  All in all a very poor country with plenty of potential. But it is kind of hard to enjoy potential.

This was our first mini suite as we had three people instead of our normal two. It was quite large and very impressive. Plenty of storage room for the three of us and unless you need to take every pair of shoes you own and more than one suit there should be no problem. The balcony seemed smaller than any we have had in the past but may be because the table, and chairs with separate ottomans took up so much room (the table seemed way bigger than any we have had in the past). The full tub was a nice feature but the towels were like drying yourself with a bath mat. We tried the pool towels and they weren't any better. The televisions were quite nice and the selection of things to watch was very impressive. You could start a movie, go out, and upon return pick up wherever you left off.

We usually get a balcony cabin but with my mother-in-law traveling with us we thought that splitting the cost of a mini suite was better than separate balcony cabins for which my mother-in-law would have had to pay double.I saw people wait for elevators to just go up one or two decks.
