This was our 6th Carnival cruise and the first on the Sunshine. Check in was a breeze. Carnival has this figured out real well. In room 6134 by 1:30 then upward and onward. We were with a group of 6 other couples and our first hiccup came at dinner time. We all wanted early seating, but could only get Anytime Dining. We got wedged into some tables so badly that the wait staff had to pass drinks, water, food, etc. to other people to pass to you. If the trend is to anytime dining, they can count me out. I like to get to know the wait staff, as opposed to a new cast every night. Fortunately my wife pleaded with various people and although we stayed in Anytime Dining we were able to get the same (unwedged) tables every night, by coming at the same time. So we did meet our stafff of David head waiter, Neemark, assistant hw and Clarke, drinks waiter. Excellent team. As an aside we tipped them extra at the end of our stay. It appears to me that true Anytime Dining reduces the chance of these teams getting extra tips. Probably doesn't make for happy employees. Food was Ok to good. Ship was newly refurbished and looked good. Jamie in charge of social activities was a Star. Everywhere and constantly in motion. Best I've seen on all my cruises. We were in room 6134 and previous reviews had prepared us for the noise level at night. That section of the ship is right over the theatre, which becomes a night club after shows and creates noise level until 1:30 in the morning. Took ear plugs. Cut out the noise, but not he vibrations of the music. Don't stay on that level if you are a light sleeper. The casino is on the 5th floor and although the noise is not an issue, the smell of smoke is there in the hallways leading to the room from the elevator area. I don't mind haveing to walk through the casino to get to almost everywhere else, but they have got to do something about the smoking in there. There are jokingly a few slot machines in there that are non-smoking, but they are in the midst of all the smoking machines. Therefore we did not spend any money in the casino. Cough, Cough. The panio bar was nicely refurbished, but the panioman Gary, was a dud. His favorite line was "I know a thousand songs, but not this one" and he didn't know some of the songs on the play sheet handed out by Carnival. Got he impression he doesn't rehearse, so I suspect the same things will apply at the end of his tour of duty. Comedy club = way too small. Great comics, but you just couldn't get in. THere was also some guy named Roy who seemed to pop up at all singing venues, kareoke, panio bar, individual singers and somehow manage to get to sing a song or two, all Frank Sinatra kindda stuff. At first we thought he was a Carnival employee, but have since learned he is a "self made Carnival lounge lizard" who books Carnival cruises and does this all the time.  Our stateroom was laid out well. Bathroom seems bigger than other Carnival ships - that is good. Strangely it seems that whoever purshased the shower curtains for Carnival missed the length by 6 inches nad water was always on the floor. Everyone of our friends had the same problem. Ports of call Cozimuel = OK, Roatan = waste of time, Belize = tendered, but excellent stop and Costa Maya = waste of time. So the $64K question is would you go back on this ship again-- answer is yes, but I would avoid many of the things that I did not like, by selecting specific cabins, dining, destinations, etc.
