Having cruised with Cunard four times previously this was our first time in Queens Grill on the Queen Elizabeth and we were suitable impressed. The cruise was the 3 night voyage (16-19th Dec) immediately before the infamous cruise to nowhere! I am mainly going to discuss the Grills experience. If you are interested, you can read a more thorough review of the whole ship from when I was in Britannia Club.

Firstly the priority embarkation is smooth and quick. On board in no time to enjoy lunch in the Queen’s Grill restaurant, although lunch on the first day is always a disappointment. The restaurant is very comfortable with superb views and is essentially a mirror image of the Princess Grill. The decor is in keeping with rest of the ship with plenty of art deco flourishes but does not feel out of date; somewhat akin to a fine London hotel. The service at all meals in the Queen’s Grill was very good, as it was in the Princess Grill on a previous voyage. You are warmly greeted by name by the Maitre’D as you enter and are usually escorted to your table. We had requested a table to two, but found ourselves on a table of 8 for lunch on the first day. This was however a mistake in the allocations and was rectified without us even asking before the evening meal. We had a lovely table for 2; not a window table but in a nice position and still looking out to sea.

Breakfast in the Queen’s Grill is virtually identical to breakfast in the Princess Grill. The menu in Britannia and Britannia club is almost the same too, apart from a couple of extra dishes that are grills only such as fillet mignon, however, having experienced all of these restaurants, the dishes are prepared slightly better for the grills. For example in Britannia you will get average quality smoked salmon with your bagel, very nice but average; in the Grills you will get delicious high quality smoked salmon that is deep red in colour. By far the best cold smoked salmon I have ever tasted.

Cabin Review

Penthouse

The Queen's Grill Penthouse is ideal for anyone seeking a little more space. The layout is great; it flows and feels like a mini apartment. There are two large flat screen TVs; one in the sitting area and one in the bedroom area. These two areas can be divided by a curtain. The bathroom is to a very high standard and was kept spotlessly clean; I highly recommend the jacuzzi bath. A major issue is the lack of UK plug sockets; only ONE in a suite of this size yet about EIGHT US ones. Annoying but did it affect the holiday or my enjoyment?? No it didn't but on a longer voyage where I may bring more appliances such as laptop computer etc it may do. The canapes brought before dinner every evening were lovely and always on time and the bottle of champagne on arrival instead of Pol Acker is very nice. However, I would've liked a bottle of Veuve Cliquot or Moet for this grade of stateroom; not a £20 bottle of Delamotte. A lovely, comfortable suite with a large and deep balcony that I would happily stay in again.
