As a working couple, we are challenged to find suitable options within our work schedule time constraints. We were fortunate to find a delightful early January diversion on the MS. Westerdam. We have sailed on HAL once before, Alaska this past May on the Statendam and have had 2 previous experiences with Seabourn on the Pride. The Westerdam is the largest ship we have sailed and found it most enjoyable. The staff was very good, better than the Statendam crew. Dinner in the MDR was always good, usually with very enjoyable table companions (open seating option). While never outstanding, the food and service were better than most land locked restaurants.

Embarkation, luggage delivery, disembarkation and airport transfers were more than acceptable. We booked air through HAL because winter travel can be problematic and we wanted support if the plane was too long delayed and we missed our departure.

Ports of call are what they are. We did not know that our day in San Juan was also a local holiday, Three Kings Day. As such, many shops and restaurants in old San Juan were closed. Not a huge issue for us, the historical sights were our target and were open. But shoppers may have been disappointed. We did not do any HAL excursions, but our travel companions who did do them were always pleased. Half Moon Cay was at the end of our trip, and a very nice way to cap off the week.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom

Cabin VE

This cabin was very far forward and starboard side. It was just aft of the bridge 'wing' hanging off the side of the ship and one deck below. As a result, about a third of the sky was blocked and it generated a great deal of wind noise while we sailed. The door sealed well so it did not disturb our sleep, but in fairness this is probably an obstructed view room. 7001 was right under the overhang. I would not recommend a cabin any more forward than 7011, and the corresponding port cabins on the 7th deck. Otherwise, good storage space and a nice verandah, the usual tight, single sink bathroom. The bed was acceptable but nothing to rave about. The room stewards did an excellent job and were very personable. But where did they learn to shine shoes? Get them polished at the airport before you board!
