All in all, we had a very good time with our friends and celebrating New Year's Eve together. Our ship went all out to celebrate the occasion. The food for the most part was very good . . .especially in the dining room. I knew before we went on our cruise that the Veendam is an older ship and I had read reviews on Cruise Critic which reiterated how the ship is in need of refurbishing for today's standards. I guess my husband and I are spoiled with the Princess ships that we have gone on. The "downer" of our trip was that our cabin had an odor of stale smoke. I have to say the staff tried to alleviate it but it was always there. Holland did give us credit for some of the charges we had. Also the room was ok . . .the large window we had needed to be caulked or attention needed to be done to the casings . . .we saw rust and corrosion around it. And the drapes over the window needed to be replaced- very worn looking. I thought it was interesting that we did not have a small refrigerator. I loved the bathroom due to us having a tub and shower. The drain to the tub was worn and there was an accumulation of water every time we took a shower but only about a couple of inches. And the couch and chair looked worn and stained somewhat but the bed was very comfortable.

I think we learned from this experience that we need to go on newer ships or have a cabin with access to outside air. We have learned not to stay on the lowest deck for passengers . . .I really feel that the staff that was housed below us smoked and it got through to our ventilation. It was fun to leave from San Diego and not have any airplanes to go on. And getting on and off the ship was a breeze.

We had warm and sunny weather. We loved Cabo and felt safe in Puerto Vallarta. With Matzatlan, the ship gave us all a letter saying there had been 'violent activity' outside the city of Matzatlan and for us all to be aware of our surroundings. So we got off the ship but stayed close by and enjoyed the vendors that were close to the terminal.
