I booked a very last minute cruise on the Jewel and I couldn't have been happier with the trip. I live in the Houston Metro and have now been on eight cruise's, five on Carnival, one on Royal Caribbean, and two on Norwegian.

The Jewel sails out of the Port of Houston which is in the industrial part of the metro and surrounded by refineries. It is not the most attractive place to begin your vacation. Embarkation was not as smooth as Carnivals process but I got on board ship with little trouble.

The Jewel is a very nice ship but a bit dated compared to the Carnival Magic. Since I was traveling alone, I didn't eat in the formal Dining room nor pay extra to eat in the other upscale restaurants. I found that the buffet food and choices were outstanding. The food was the best buffet food I have eaten on any cruise. I also ate in the sports bar and that food also was very good. There is an omelet station on the stern that got very little attention so if you like omelets for breakfast then eat there. It is also a very nice spot to watch the world cruise by.

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Inside

Cabin IA

I bought this cruise for $239 for one person with an inside cabin. I normally book a balcony cabin but this price was too good to not take advantage of it. I had the two twins made up into a queen bed. This was a mistake. By doing some you loose usable floor space in the room. For example If my wife had been with me I would have had to crawl to the bottom of the bed to get out of it or crawl over her. They say that you could have slept a third in this room but then it would have been wall to wall bed.For a couple this is a great value if you leave the room configured with twin beds. I was two decks below the pool deck yet one night I smelled the smell of the Charcoal BBQ in my room. Deck ten midships is a good room location. You are two decks up to the pool deck and buffet, three decks down to the dining room deck and the main activities deck. The bedding was as good as you get in a five star hotel.
