Sail Date: Dec 2014

My wife and I cruised on the Disney Magic to the Western Caribbean in early December 2014. This was our 18th cruise overall but first on a Disney ship (we’ve also cruised Royal Carib, Norwegian, Holland America, and Princess). Overall it was a good cruise, some things were great, others just okay.

EMBARK/DISEMBARK – We drove to Port Canaveral from our Florida home and arrived at the pier parking garage at 11:30 which is the start of embarking. Easy to drop off our bags with the friendly porters, then we parked for $120 for the week. Pricey but very convenient. We went thru security and checkin and were on the ship in 15 minutes. We booked early embarkation online so were allowed on the ship quickly. We had lunch, which was a buffet, in the deck 3 dining room. The buffet on deck 9 was also open with same food. Rooms were ready exactly at 1:30, lifeboat drill at 4:00, then we sailed at 4:30.

Last day departure was also easy. We had late dining so had the late breakfast (8:15) in the same dining room as the last night’s dinner, with same servers. Then we walked off the ship, got our bags, went thru customs & immigration and left. They did not assign groups or call numbers for departure. If you had early dining, your final breakfast was at 7:00. There was also an option to leave early with your luggage.

Cabin Review

Cabin 9C

We booked a cat 9C outside room on deck 2 (#2126) with a porthole. The room was very large compared to other ships and had a split bathroom – small tub/shower and sink, then toilet and sink. We liked that as each of us had our own sink and counter space. Room steward was terrific and very efficient. However, the bed was smaller than any we’ve had before, slightly narrower (almost a queen bed) and shorter. I am not a real tall person but my feet hung over the edge unless I put my head up touching the headboard. The room and outside hallway also had a real “funky” smell, not quite sewage but definitely unpleasant, that we did not like. Finally, we found on early port days that the lateral thrusters were right below us so we had loud noise and vibrations each time. Bottom line – DO NOT book this cabin or rooms near it, on either side, unless you like early morning wake up (5 AM coming into Port Canaveral). Between the bed and the thruster noise, I did not get much sleep.
