Fares are very low (1/2 peak season) and the crowds are reduced in Europe if you go in fall or winter. The drawbacks include a greater chance of rain, some attractions may be on reduced hours and it can be a bit chilly. We were able to use frequent flyer miles to Europe on Delta, as these are hard to redeem in the summer.

It is eleven Euros to take a train to the Civitavecchia port from Rome FCO airport. The ticket machine at the airport by the entrance the train station will sell you these- you take a local train to Rome Trastevere and change trains/platforms (read the monitors in the tunnel under the tracks) for the local to Civitavecchia. Note the journey takes almost 2 hours, and we found limited luggage space on one of the trains. You can otherwise take the lovely Leonardo Express right to Termini (easy and fast), then you would change trains there. Note always validate your Italian train tickets in the little greenish machines provided. Invest in a neck pouch, money belt or security purse for Rome as reports of pickpockets were rampant.

Pre-cruise we stayed at the San Giorgio Hotel in Civitavecchia, a few blocks toward the port from the train station. It is another few blocks to the port entrance, where there is a free shuttle to the ship.

Quiet, well designed. The bathroom is soundproof, well ventilated and there is good closet space. Flawless cabin service.
