CARNIVAL VALOR: We weren't expecting too much from Carnival, mainly booked this cruise because of the fabulous itinerary (Southern Carib), and the ridiculously low price (nearly HALF, compared to other cruise lines). We have sailed them all... Princess, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, with our favorites being Holland America and Celebrity for their upscale, traditional cruising styles. So we board the Carnival Valor without very high expectations... and what do we get? VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!

DINING: First and foremost, the dining experience was extremely satisfying, no complaints whatsoever. Evening entrée choices were completely on par with every other popular cruise line we have ever sailed, absolutely nothing sub-par about Carnival. In fact in many areas Carnival was better. On "sea days" brunch in the dining room was elaborate and wonderful. On "port days" traditional dining room service was not offered for lunch, however there were several options... various restaurants, the standard pool deck buffet, and 4-5 different "themed" buffets as well. Standard offerings on the nightly dining room menu (no limit) include filet mignon, prime rib, oysters Rockerfeller, fresh fish, pasta dishes, braised short ribs, lamb chops, crab cakes, escargot, frogs legs, elegant soups, and amazing desserts including warm melting cake, liqueur infused specialty items, etc. The specialty restaurants (included) were wonderful as well. Scarlett's Steakhouse (pay-extra) was pricey at $35pp but worth every penny. And there were nightly midnight buffets! (who does that anymore?) In addition, individual fresh-made pizza, caesar salad, ice cream and frozen yogurt are available throughout the day (and night), along with 24- hour room service. You will never go hungry.

STATEROOMS: Carnival staterooms are reportedly 40% larger. Don't underestimate the value of this, particularly if you choose inside, oceanview, or balcony accommodations. In our "guaranty" category (the cheapest oceanview rate), we had a spacious layout in which we could very comfortably walk around BOTH sides of the bed, dine at the table AND sit on the leathery sofa AND write at the desk AND access the fridge/mini-bar without bumping into each other or having to move aside to allow another to pass. This is huge. Another "plus" was having 3 separate closets (most lines give 2) as well as drawers and shelves. And a comfortably sized bathroom; 2 ppl could use the space together if so inclined. Interactive TV, frosty A/C, beautiful wood cabinetry, incredibly comfortable beds, pillows, blankets and linens. Housekeeping was impeccable. All public areas of the ship were gleaming. Everywhere you looked someone was polishing, sweeping, swabbing the deck, etc. With Art Deco design details, not over-the-top or tacky, the Valor looked and felt like new.
