My wife and I just returned from a Caribbean cruise aboard the Royal Princess. The ship is beautiful and very well maintained and the itinerary & excursions were good. The service was fantastic! All staff seemed pleased to be able to help and, perhaps, even happy to be aboard. However, the regular food (main dining rooms & buffets), while being plentiful and with a wide variety of choices, was just mediocre to good - not great. The specialty restaurants, Sabatini's and Crown Grille, were terrific! The biggest disappointment was the live entertainment. Specifically, the specialty acts. Comedian (and I use that term loosely) Al Katz was simply not funny. His routine (what little there was) was threadbare and derivative of every other comic we've ever seen - he was a waste of time and we actually left his show. He's a poor representative of the cruise line in our opinion. And the magic act, David Cats, (what's the deal with the cat names?) seemed competent but pedestrian, if not ill conceived in theme of his show (something about a hotel and the only real link was a haggard recurring bit with a dancer dressed as a bell hop). The production shows were glitzy albeit plodding and extremely old school "Vegas" - the tech side (lighting and sets/screens) was nicely done. The entertainment highlights were an Elton John tribute act (whose name I can't remember) and the outdoor big screen that shows Movies Under The Stars and sports. We'd sail with Princess again, we just hope that the quality level of the food and entertainment on this trip was an anomaly.
