I enjoyed the few cruises I had been on before this one but I think this is probably my last. The vast Epic struggles to deal with the enormity of the task of feeding and entertaining its 4,000 or so passengers.

The daily scrum in the complimentary buffet, the Garden Café , showed the worst side of freestyle cruising. Hundreds of people going in different directions trying to find something to their taste, only to end up half an hour later with some mediocre , stone-cold concoction. Then part 2 of this deeply unsatisfying dining experience - find somewhere to sit! By the time you complete both missions you are contemplating self-harming as a hobby.

For those that want to avoid this deeply undignified trolley dash there is always the option (in the evening at least) to spend more of your precious money on upgrading to the 'Speciality restaurants'. Beware, because Cagney's Steakhouse aside, the rest are taking your hard - earned money by false pretences. Le Bistro which is meant to be their flagship French restaurant is fit to make a Frenchman cry. OK the service is obviously a little pretentious and I get that people like that when they are paying extra but you have to have the food to match it and this one does not. The escalopes of fillet of pork were not freshly cooked and I guess had been hanging around for quite a while as they were completely dried out and nowhere near the medium we were informed they had been cooked. My four mouthfuls of lobster from the smallest crustacean I have ever encountered on my plate were ok but I would have preferred them to have removed the nasty , tough membrane which detracts from this dish. The profiteroles were more like short crust pastry than choux and were distinctly not fresh and to compound the disaster were covered in a bland, luke-warm version of what you might expect on an iced bun.
