This was on my husband's bucket list. We had done Alaska with Holland America on the Westerdam 2 years ago and the Caribbean 2 yrs before that. We had never done a 20 day cruise before but the itenary was great and a full transit seemed what we would want. Prior to leaving, I had booked the excursions that we wanted with Holland America, liking the security and peace of mind, knowing that if anything went wrong, Holland America would see you to your next port of call. We left Vancouver, having stayed at the Waterfront overnight...great hotel and view of the harbour. Embarkation process was excellent...very efficient and friendly and we were on board very swiftly. Made my way to front desk to book 2 cookery classes and a ship's tour for my husband, then offloaded our luggage. The stateroom 6064 was plenty big enough for the 3 of us, as was the balcony. No engine noise or vibration could be felt throughout the trip.

Left Vancouver amid warm breezes and sunny skies with sunning vistas of bridges and mountains. Arrived next day in Astoria, where we were able to meet a friend who showed us around the local area with great pride. Had lunch at a brew pub by the harbour and also visted the Memorial Wall where those lost at sea were remembered. A memorable day out. Two days later we were in San Francisco, enjoying lunch at Boudin's...famous for clam chowder...and watching the sea lions knock each other off their pontoons, with much barking!! Leaving San Francisco was delayed which turned out to be a bonus, as we got to see the city all lit up, including the Westerdam which had arrived mid afternoon. With ships horns blowing and the city, ships and bridges all lit up, it was a great send off.

Cabo San Lucas was the first of the Mexican ports to be visited. Great rock formation and strong surfs, though the shops and night life would be more for others than myself. Huatulco was next and was by far our favourite Mexican port. Small, colourful and vibrant, it made you feel in the holiday mood. We had a 5 bay sloop excursion ....not to be confused with the catamaran excursion...here early morning. With the Sierra Madre Mountains in the background, it was a wonderful 3.5 hrs viewing the scenery, including a stop for swimming in one of the bays. The 2 boat crew were professional, yet friendly and casual...perfect for the job. They handed out drinks of choice for those that fancied and gave interesting information of their area. An excellent tour and well worth the money.
