Let’s just start by saying The Splendor of the Seas is not one of the new mega ships. She’s a fine old girl who’s starting to show her age. Having previously sailed on Rhapsody of the Seas several times, my wife and I knew what to expect. Splendor was built in the mid 90’s and had a face lift in 2011, but, she’s still about 20 years old. RCCL tried to retrofit her to have more balcony’s, specialty restaurants and things cruisers are expecting, but, she’s still an older vessel so passengers will just have to deal with it.

Our cruise departed Venice on Oct. 11th with stops in Croatia, Turkey and Greece and finally back to Venice. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and were glad we did. Most of our previous cruises have been to the Caribbean and this cruise offered something a little different. Most of our fellow cruisers on this ship were a little older and the sea day activities were a little tamer. There was a group of exchange students from the US that were attending a Theater Program in Tuscany. Their presence enhanced the trip by sharing their talents whenever possible. At one point one student played the piano while another sang, they were just as good if not better than the onboard talent.

We booked our Airfare thru RCCL and ChoiceAir, there was some apprehension due to reviews of Aer Lingus I read online, but, everything went according to plan. All our flights were on time and connections went smoothly. We took the public bus from the Venice Airport to Piazzale Roma, and then hopped on the people mover to the ship. Our trip originated in the Midwest so bringing a couple of bottles of wine with us was not an option, but, there is a Coop (Italian Grocery Store) right by the Piazzale Roma so we picked up 4 bottle of wine (2 per stateroom) and headed to the ship. Cost for this was 6 Euro each for ATVO bus, 1.3 Euro for People mover and 20 Euro for the wine. Time from airport to ship with the stop at Coop about an hour, ‘Piece of Cake’ even if you don’t speak Italian.

Cabin M

Room is somewhat small, but, the idea is to enjoy other areas of ship. It suited us just fine.
