My wife and I sailed on the NCL Getaway from 9/13-9/20. We had sailed most recently in the past 6-8 years on Carnival and many years ago on Carnival and Princess. We are in our early 50’s but think of ourselves as younger!

I read many reviews of the NCL Getaway and other ships before we decided on our cruise and found many of them to be helpful. No cruise is going to please everyone and it amazes me when reviewers are on the same ship at the same time and have completely different impressions. It’s like; “were they on the same cruise?”!!! So, I will try to not be real personal about my opinions so, hopefully; others can make an informed opinion about this cruise and not be swayed by things that might only apply to me.

This is a new ship and extremely clean. There are hand wash stations in many spots and there are hand sanitizer machines all over. There is a huge emphasis on hygiene here and they will almost make you use hand sanitizer when you come on the ship and enter the Garden Café Buffet. Every bathroom has paper towel dispensers near the exit and there are signs asking you to use paper towels to open the door with waste cans there to throw them away. As I described it, “The Ship still has that New Ship Smell”. I have been on Carnival ships which were nice but they don’t match the cleanliness of this ship. Don’t let anyone complain about this ship being clean if they happened on some isolated mess. This ship was immaculate!!!!

Cabin Review

Family Balcony Stateroom

Cabin B4

The Cabin:We went with a balcony cabin and were in 12774. Our steward was Christopher and he was excellent. We didn’t notice him and saw him in the hallway when we left a lot but never in our room. He remembered our names from the moment we met him and that person-ability was nice. We don’t agree with those who say the balcony is too small. It had two chairs and a little table and we sat out there and watched the sea or the ports and relaxed. It is nice and peaceful to sit and read on and I have no complaints. There is a light switch inside the cabin to put the light on out there which we didn’t realize existed for a couple of days! Our bed was very comfortable and linens were fresh and nice! TIP: They keep an extra blanket and pillows in drawers under the little sofa! I am glad we saw that tip when I read a review or we would not have been aware of them. There are no drawers in a dresser but the closet has cubbies and a top shelf plus a safe (which we used constantly to store our wallets and cash since the room key could be used to pay for anything on board) and we were able to put all our stuff away.TIP: You can fit a large empty suitcase under the bed. It sure helped to get my suitcase out of the way!The bathroom is good sized with storage space. Our steward kept it clean when we were away and we had no complaints. It seems to me other ships had more cramped and less functional bathrooms. We didn’t like the shower set up very much. It is a stall which is nice and somehow the heat stays in so when you exit the shower the mirrors aren’t even fogged up which is nice if someone is using the sink while one showers. Our complaint with the shower was the water pressure wasn’t real strong but more importantly, it was a hand held shower head that did hook in but the water flowed very close to the wall where the handles were for turning it on and temperature. If you are not used to a hand-held shower head it is difficult to take a really good shower! There is a little step to put your feet on to clean but if you lean in you hit your head! The space is very close when you go under the showerhead. They could have let the shower flow more to the center of the space (allow the holder to tilt forward instead of just up and down) and not be so close to the wall where you can hit your head very easily.
